Charlotte Latin, Marvin Ridge swimmers, North Rowan QB are Observer athletes of the week
Here are this winners of the Charlotte Observer high school football and athlete of the week.
▪ Norvy Clontz, Charlotte Latin Swimming: The Hawks’ freshman won boys athlete of the week after swimming lifetime bests to win both the 200 freestyle (1:44.18) and 500 freestyle (4:37.25) as Charlotte Latin beat both Cannon School and Charlotte Christian in their season-opener at their home pool, Nov. 18.
Charlotte Latin beat Charlotte Christian, 77-10, while knocking off Cannon School, 62-32, at the same meet.
Clontz also swim years round for the SwimMAC Carolinas’ club team.
▪ Grace Wagner, Marvin Ridge Swimming: The Mavericks’ senior is girls athlete of the week after winning the 50 freestyle (24.99) and finishing as runner-up in the 100 freestyle (54.08) to lead the Marvin Ridge girls’ swim team to a win over rival, Weddington in the season-opener for both teams Nov. 15.
Wagner is West Point (Army) commit.
▪ Jeremiah Alford, North Rowan: freshman QB became first player in school history to throw five touchdowns in a playoff game, when North Rowan lost 50-47 to Robbinsville in a third round game. Alford passed for 248 yards and finished the season with 23 touchdown passes and 15 rushing TDs. The five TD passes in a game tied a school record set by Mitch Ellis in 1994 (vs. Mount Pleasant) and equaled by Mario Sturdivant in 1997 (vs. West Rowan).
