Nationally ranked Combine Academy survives big scare from Chambers at Hoops Challenge

The Combine Academy Goats knocked off Julius Chambers in the premier game on the second day of the Charlotte Hoops Challenge, but Chambers didn’t go away without a fight.

The Cougars, a 4A public school favorite, had a late fourth quarter lead before nationally ranked Comine was able to make some big shots late in a 62-60 win. Chambers had two attempts to tie or take the lead in the finals seconds.

“(We need to) be more confident and move the ball,” said Combine coach Jeff McInnis, whose team is ranked No. 10 in MaxPreps’ latest national poll. “We got a lead and kind of squandered it. So, just keep guards like Jaylen Curry out of the paint.”

KELLYHOOD

After jumping out to a quick lead, big man Patrick Wessler picked up his second foul in the first quarter. McInnis sat Wessler for the remainder of the first quarter and into the second quarter as well. Wessler would be able to stay out of foul trouble the rest of the game and help his team in the final minutes of the game.

Combine was much more effective with the 7-foot Virginia Tech signee on the floor.

“I just had to make an emphasis on walling up and not coming down with my hands,” Wessler said. Wessler finished the game with 14 points and 17 rebounds. Six of his rebounds were offensive. He also accounted for all five of Combine’s blocks in the game.

“I thought he (Wessler) was really the difference down the stretch,” McInnis said. “We got the ball to him early in the third (quarter) and tried to establish a lead. It was his blocks and his rebounds down the stretch that really propelled us to victory.”

KELLYHOOD

For Chambers, Jaylen Curry scored 25 points along with six assists on the night. His defense for the Cougars made a big difference as he had five steals as well.

In the end, it was a close game that Combine was able to win, but coach McInnis recognizes just how good Chambers is and how they tested his team.

“Chambers really came out tough,” McInnis said. “I know a lot of their players. Jaylen Curry was great; Daniel Sanford, two guys I have coached in the past so I knew they would be juiced up to come and play us. I like their team. They are a really good team. It was a good test for us.”

KELLYHOOD

THREE WHO MADE A DIFFERENCE

Jayden Epps, Combine Academy: Epps came out very strong scoring nine of his 15 points in the first quarter. He was the one who got the Goats’ offense going and fired his team up early in the game when Chambers would go on runs.

Patrick Wessler, Combine Academy: The 7-foot center was critical late in the game gathering rebound after rebound for his team. Chambers was a hard team to keep off the glass when Wessler wasn’t on the floor. When he was though, Chambers was not able to get many second looks per trip down the floor.

Daniel Sanford, Chambers: If you didn’t pay attention, you could miss how key Sanford was to the Cougars team. He might not have put up the points that his teammate Jaylen Curry did, but his defense played a critical role in his team’s performance as he had two blocks and helped force several turnovers.

WORTH MENTIONING

Chambers outscored Combine 20-10 in the third quarter, and kept pushing in the fourth quarter, led by Curry.

Combine’s defense was at its best in the fourth quarter as the Goats held Chambers to just 2-17 shooting from the field in the final eight minutes.

Turnovers almost proved to be Combine’s demise as Chambers scored 25 points off of turnovers.

WHAT’S NEXT

For Chambers, they head home to host Myers Park on Nov. 30. Combine Academy improves to 6-0 on the season and will face Moravian Prep on Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. at the Tyler Lewis Hoop Fest at Forsyth Country Day.
