Here are the winner of the Charlotte Observer athlete of the week for the week of Dec. 4.
Jake Shearin, Central Academy basketball: The 6-foot-5 junior had a career-high 40 points to go with 12 rebounds to lead Central Academy to their first win of the season: a 91-46 victory over Apprentice Academy Dec. 1.
Chandler Brooks, Providence Day girls basketball: The 5-foot-11 junior averaged 16 points and seven rebounds per game as Providence Day beat Byrnes, Durham Academy and Lincoln Charter this week.
Brooks had five points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals in a 44-37 win over Lincoln Charter, Nov. 30.
She also had 22 points, seven rebounds and a steal in the opening round of the Battle at the Rock Showcase in Rock Hill to help the Chargers to a 58-34 victory over Byrnes, Dec. 3.
Brooks also had 21 points to lead Providence Day (5-1) to a 53-36 win over Durham Academy in championship game. Brooks also earned the most valuable player (MVP) of the Battle at the Rock Showcase for the second straight season.
Juelenea Khang, Freedom wrestling: The Patriots’ wrestler went a perfect 6-0 this week with five pins in her 106-pound weight class, beating her opponents from Alexander Central, Mallard Creek, North Henderson, North Iredell and West Iredell, with a forfeit victory over Providence Day.
Khang is 11-2 overall this season with all 11 wins coming by pinfall.
