Charlotte-Mecklenburg high school football coach resigns

Hopewell High football coach Jamelle Byrd will not return next season.

Byrd made the announcement on social media that he is resigning.

Byrd was hired in February of 2018, moving over from West Mecklenburg, where he was defensive coordinator. He took over a team that was 4-40 in the previous four years.

Byrd’s first team was 0-11. The Titans were 1-6 in the spring of 2021 and 1-9 this fall, but Byrd’s 2019 team finished 4-7, and got a 37-30 win over rival North Mecklenburg.

“I am very proud to have been a key part of laying a solid foundation in a program that hadn’t had a win in years,” he wrote on Twitter, “to creating a culture where we barely missed the playoffs in arguably the toughest conference in the state of North Carolina. I’m proud to see these student-athletes fighting through unprecedented times, with a pandemic and other challenges, while staying focused.”

While at Hopewell, Byrd said he sent more than 12 players to college on scholarships.
