Prep Basketball Rewind: East Meck extends win streak against Garinger

The East Mecklenburg Eagles defeated the Garinger Wildcats 56-46 in what was a defensive-driven game the majority of the time. Garinger only had 15 points at the halftime break until they finally got into a bit of a rhythm in the second half. With the win, East Mecklenburg extends their win streak and overall record to 6-3.

“We came in tonight expecting Garinger to really give us a tough contest,” Eagles Head Coach Jason Buzzard said. “We understand that Garinger is really trying to rebuild that culture over there but they have definitely improved.”

The bright spot in the Eagles’ offense all game long was junior guard Kanye Johnson. The junior shooting guard played at a very high level in all four quarters totaling 21 points in the game. He had eight in the fourth quarter which really helped to ice the game away when the Wildcats tried to make a late push.

“We’ve been working since April,” Johnson said. “We came out here ready to play and put it all on the line.”

Put it all on the line they did, literally and figuratively. On several occasions down the stretch of the game, several Eagles were diving on the court after loose balls to try and salvage their possession or force a turnover.

Coach Buzzard felt as if his team’s defense was a big key to the win. “Our defense was really solid tonight,” Buzzard said. “I thought our style of defense in the half-court, and we picked it up in full court, I thought they (Garinger) really had struggled getting in the flow of their offense and we made them uncomfortable.”

Garinger wouldn’t go away, however, as they put up 21 points in the fourth quarter in their comeback efforts. In the end, it was not enough to bring the Wildcats all the way back, and the Eagles were able to hit a few free throws late and cap off the win.

THREE WHO MADE A DIFFERENCE

Kanye Johnson, East Mecklenburg: He was the catalyst for the Eagles all game. Not just on the offensive side of the ball either but his defense also proved to be a vital part of the win also as he forced a few turnovers by Garinger.

Jordon Nevil, East Mecklenburg: All nine of Nevil’s points might have come in the first quarter, but what he lacked in scoring the remainder of the game, he made up for with his passing. He ended the game with six assists and just one turnover. When he touched the ball good things seemed to happen.

David Anderson, Garinger: The shifty 5’10 guard did everything in his power to will his team back in the game. He scored eight of his 12 points in the fourth quarter and 10 in the final four minutes of the quarter. He caught fire late and his team kept feeding him the ball.

WORTH MENTIONING

Neither team shot the three particularly well as only five three-pointers were made between both squads. Three of these came from the Eagles’ Nevil in the first quarter of the game.

After having extended their lead out to 22 at one point, East Mecklenburg had four straight empty possessions, all of which the Wildcats found ways to score on. This ultimately let the Wildcats find their way back in the game towards the end.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Garinger improves to 6-3 on the season and extends their win streak to four straight. They will face conference opponent Butler on Dec. 12. For Garinger, they remain winless with a home conference game against Independence on Dec. 12

.Garinger girls win fourth straight game

Second-year Garinger HIgh girls basketball coach Justin Clarke is really having an impact with the Garinger HIgh girls basketball team.

A year ago, in his rookie season, Clarke’s team ended a 42-game losing streak, led by Hickory Ridge transfer Betsey Burnett. Garinger finished the shortened spring season 2-7.

Now, the Wildcats are 5-2 after Tuesday’s 57-47 win over East Meck. Garinger has won four straight games. Burnett had 21 points for the Wildcats Tuesday.

Garinger never trailed in the game. After a 22-10 first quarter, which saw the Wildcats hit five three-pointers, East Mecklenburg got in on the action with a few three-pointers of their own in the second quarter.

Garinger held a 10 point lead with 5:43 remaining until they stretched the lead out to 19 with three straight three-point baskets.
