State championship-winning coach at Charlotte high school football power resigns
After leading Chambers High School to three state championship games in three seasons, Glenwood Ferebee won’t return for Year 4.
Chambers athletic director Montis Lash said Thursday afternoon that Ferebee has resigned. At Chambers, Ferebee was 39-5, including 14-1 in the playoffs. Ferebee’s first two teams won N.C. 4AA state championships.
Cardinal Gibbons upset nationally ranked Chambers 14-2 to win the 4A state championship last week.
The two titles that Ferebee’s teams won were the first two football state championships in school history.
“He’s been historical to (Chambers),” Lash said.
Ferebee wasn’t immediately available for comment, but Lash said that “coach Ferebee has some opportunities that will become available here in the near future and he’s decided that’s what is best for him.”
Ferebee was the Charlotte Observer All-Region and N.C. all-state coach of the year last season. Under Ferebee’s watch, the school had seen more than 50 student-athletes earn college scholarships, Lash said.
Lash said the search for a replacement would begin immediately and the job would be advertised Friday. The school will form a hiring commitment to vet potential candidates to replace Ferebee.
“We’re looking for the total package, man,” Lash said, “The guy that can build our student-athletes on and off the field and someone that understands the school’s culture and where we’re attempting to take the vision that our principal has for our student body. ... someone who understands the kids we have and the demographic we serve, and someone that values winning but more than that, they value building young men for the future.”
With Chambers’ recent success, including being ranked as high as No. 12 in the nation this year, Lash said he felt the opening would draw a large number of candidates.
“We’ll move fast but we’ll be diligent,” Lash said. “This is a very high-profile job.”
