Meet the players on the All-Observer girls golf and field hockey teams

The Observer begins a week of all-star teams with girls golf and field hockey All-Observer teams, the top players in the newspaper’s 161-school coverage area in western North Carolina.

All-Observer Field Hockey

Myers Park’s Erica Adcock is the Charlotte Observer field hockey coach of the year after leading the Mustangs to their second NCFHA state championship, beating East Chapel Hill 3-0 Nov. 6.

Myers Park also won the state title May 22 after the fall 2020 season was delayed because of COV-19 related issues.

The Mustangs were dominant when it mattered most, winning their last eight games, outscoring their opponents 31-1 in four playoff games.

Myers Park senior midfielder Lyles Deschamps is the Charlotte Observer field hockey player of the year after the all-state, all-South Region and Charlotte Metro conference player of the year scored 10 goals and had 11 assists to lead Myers Park to the state title.

Deschamps had two goals in Myers Park’s 3-0 win over East Chapel Hill in the state championship match.

FORWARDS

Samantha Garden, Weddington: All-state senior forward is a Lindenwood University commit who led the Warriors with 16 goals.

Josie Mae Gruendel, Covenant Day: All-state junior had three goals, four assists to help the Lions to the NCISAA state semifinals.

Virginia Olin, Providence Day: All-state junior had 17 goals and six assists for NCISAA state runner-up.

Cameron Park, Charlotte Country Day: University of North Carolina commit was named all-state, all-South region; led the Charlotte Observer area with 27 goals to go with seven assists.

Katie Prendeville, Charlotte Catholic: The Southern Carolinas’ conference offensive player of the year and all-state pick had five goals and 10 assists.

MIDFIELDERS/FORWARDS

Emily Eaton, Covenant Day: The Lions’ all-state sophomore was a key offensive weapon with four goals.

Caroline Switzer, Charlotte Country Day: The Bucs’ all-state senior midfielder had two goals and two assists.

MIDFIELDERS

Lyle Deschamps, Myers Park: The Mustangs’ all-state, all-South Region senior was also the Charlotte Metro Conference offensive player of the year with 10 goals and 11 assists.

Kate Longo, Providence Day: The Liberty University commit was named all-state and all-South Region. The senior had 12 goals, nine assists.

Audrey Okland, Charlotte Latin: The Hawks’ senior captain was an all-state performer.

Lucy Osherow, Providence Day: The Ohio State commit was named all-state, all-South region. The junior had 11 goals and 17 assists (new school record for assists in a season) for the Chargers.

Penny Valbuena, Myers Park: The second-team, all-state junior had five goals and seven assists for the Mustangs.

DEFENDERS/MIDFIELDERS

Caroline Golden, Myers Park: The all-state junior was an all-South Region pick and Charlotte Metro Conference defensive player of the year. Golden had nine goals and nine assists.

Leah Horowitz, Providence Day: The University of Maryland commit was named all-state and had 12 goals, 14 assists.

DEFENDERS

Marisa Montione, Charlotte Catholic: The Southern Carolinas’ Conference defensive player of the year and all-state pick also had three goals and five assists. She hopes to continue her academic and athletic career at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Reese Harkleroad, Myers Park: The Mustangs’ junior was a key piece of a defense that allowed only one goal in four playoff games.

Addie Paradise, Charlotte Country Day: The Buccaneers’ senior all-state center back also had three assists.

Lauren Romeiser, South Mecklenburg: The Sabres’ defender also a key offensive weapon with six goals, 10 assists.

Katie Teates, Providence Day: The Chargers’ three-time, all-conference performer also two goals, two assists.

GOALKEEPERS

Elizabeth Tegeler, Providence Day: The Chargers’ all-state junior goalkeeper is an Appalachian State commit allowed only 19 goals in 22 games.

Zella Thomas, Charlotte Country Day: The Buccaneers’ all-state junior goalkeeper had 97 saves with 10 shutouts, including a 1-0 win over Providence Day in the NCISAA state championship game.

Charley Vandenstock, Marvin Ridge: The Mavericks’ sophomore saved 195 of 222 shots on goal (87.8 percent) with four shutouts, allowing only 2.38 goals per game.

All-Observer Girls Golf

Myers Park’s Elizabeth Rudisill is used to excelling on the golf course as a junior golfer as the No. 5 player in the state, according to the Tarheel Youth Golf Association (TYGA).

Rudisill, the Charlotte Observer girls’ golfer of the year, wasted no time proving she was among the best players in the state as she finished as co-4A state runner-up, 4A West Regional runner-up and the SoMeck 4A conference tournament runner-up in her first varsity season.

Ardrey Kell’s Daniel Karaszewski is the Charlotte Observer girls’ golf coach of the year after leading the Knights to both SoMeck 4A conference and 4A West Regional titles (by six shots).

Ardrey Kell also finished fourth-place as a team at the 4A state championship.

FIRST TEAM

Katelyn Griggs, Gray Stone Day, Jr.: The 1A/2A state champion also won 1A/2A Central Regional title shooting an even-par 72.

Caroline Johnson, Pine Lake Prep, So.: The 1A/2A West Regional co-champion also tied for fifth at the 1A/2A state championship.

Sophie Lature, Cox Mill, So.: The 4A West Regional champion by six shots (shot 65), also finished 10th at the 4A state championship.

Nicole Nash, Ardrey Kell, So.: The SoMeck 4A conference tournament champion (66) also finished third at the 4A West Regional, tied for seventh at the 4A state championship.

Elizabeth Pritchard, Providence Day, Fr.: The Chargers’ freshman won the CISAA conference title, also tied for 10th at the NCISAA Division I state championship to earn all-state honors.

Elizabeth Rudisill, Myers Park, Fr.: The Mustangs’ freshman played big in the biggest events as the co-4A state runner-up and 4A West Regional runner-up.

Shea Smith, Ardrey Kell, Jr.: The Knights’ junior finished sixth at the 4A West Regional, tied for 15th at the 4A state championship.

Bethany Welch, Carmel Christian, Jr.: The Cougars’ junior earned all-state honors shooting an even par to finish third at the NCISAA Division I state championships.

Jasmine Yeung, Weddington, Fr.: Southern Carolinas’ conference (SCC) player of the year also finished fourth-place at the 4A West Regional, tied-34th-place at the 4A state championships.
