Shelby High School is the Charlotte Observer Sweet 16 football champions

Shelby High School won its seventh N.C. High School Athletic Association state championship in nine years earlier this month. The Golden Lions finished the season 15-1 and today are named as the champions of the Charlotte Observer’s Sweet 16 poll.

Shelby will receive a large banner to hang in their gym. It is the Golden Lions first Sweet 16 championship.

The Golden Lions only loss was to S.C. 4A state champion South Pointe, which beat the Golden Lions 51-37 in September. After that, Shelby won 13 straight games.
