Saturday’s Girls HS Basketball Rewind: No. 9 North Meck overcomes 1-of-1 Prep
In the inaugural Martin Luther King Jr. Queens Challenge, North Mecklenburg’s girls defeated 1-of-1 Prep 60-51 despite a valiant comeback effort from the ladies on LaMelo Ball’s new start-up team.
1-of-1 Prep is led by top 20 recruit Ella Hobbs, a 6-foot-4 sophomore forward. North Mecklenburg did an excellent job of denying her the ball in the first half and forcing others to score.
Despite Hobbs’ 24 points and 14 rebounds, the Vikings kept the ball out of Hobbs’ hands just enough in the end to get the win.
“Ella Hobbs is a great player,” North Mecklenburg coach Jennifer Baker said. “Her size...I was concerned about it. We did a good job. We tried to deny her the ball. That’s a solid team out there but we were able to playing a little bit quicker than them.”
The Vikings kept an uptempo approach all game long tiring out the size of 1 of 1. In doing so, they were able to get a lot of fastbreak opportunities and easy transition baskets.
North Meck guard Dearia Page had 13 points in the win and really propelled her team in the third quarter when 1-of-1 made a push to comeback.
THREE WHO MADE A DIFFERENCE
Dearia Page, North Mecklenburg: Adding to her 13-point performance, Page also helped force a handful of turnover. Her tough defense proved to be the difference late in the third quarter to help stop a late push by 1 of 1 Academy.
Ella Hobbs, 1 of 1: 24 points and 13 rebounds is to be expected out of such a highly touted recruit, but what Hobbs brings to the table is the ability to take over a basketball game. The third quarter was evidence of that. She touched the ball on just about every 1 of 1 possession and scored on many of them as well.
Nevaeh Farmer, North Mecklenburg: She led the Lady Vikings in scoring with 15 and also added in a few assists as well. She would come over to double team Ella Hobbs on occasion as well as help deny her the ball down low.
WORTH MENTIONING
▪ The Hobbs sisters accounted for 30 points for 1 of 1 Academy.
▪ North Mecklenburg’s Taylor Dunn also added 13 points for the Lady Vikings with six of those coming on three-point baskets.
WHAT’S NEXT
North Mecklenburg improves to 14-2 on their season and will play Hough on Jan. 21. 1 of 1 falls to 18-8 with their next game coming on Jan. 16 against Virginia Episcopal School.
