On a Monday when most schools were off due to an ice storm that hit the area over the weekend, Providence Day’s girls basketball team shut down powerhouse Charlotte Catholic.

The Chargers handed Catholic its first loss of the season, beating the No. 1 ranked team in the Charlotte Observer’s Sweet 16 48-27.

The game was part of a Martin Luther King Day tournament at Providence Day. Three games were scheduled, but only one was played due to the weather.

Providence Day was strong from the start, leading 10-4 after the first quarter and 25-11 at halftime.

Catholic (16-1) didn’t score more than seven points in a quarter until the fourth, and the Chargers limited Catholic star Blanca Thomas, a top 10 recruit in the class of 2023, to four points.

Providence Day (14-2), No. 9 in the Sweet 16, got 15 points from Addy Holgorsen and 14 from Jordyn Latter. Holgorson, a Clemson soccer signee, made four of her team’s nine 3-point field goals. Providence Day was 9-of-21 as a team.
