Thursday’s recaps: Metrolina Christian springs big upset

Metrolina Christian knocked off its third Charlotte Observer Sweet 16 opponent in two weeks Thursday night, downing host Gaston Day 58-48.

The seventh-ranked Spartans led 35-33 after three quarters, but the Warriors piled up a 25-13 edge in the final eight minutes for the Metrolina Athletic Conference victory.

Jacob Fisher led Metrolina Christian (12-11, 4-4) with 13 points, connecting on four 3-pointers; and Michael Wilson Jr. added 10 points and 10 rebounds. Callum Richard paced Gaston Day (17-2, 6-1) with 18 points.

BOYS

Bessemer City 62, Thomas Jefferson Academy 47: The Yellow Jackets (10-3, 3-1) handed the Gryphons (11-3, 2-1) their first Southern Piedmont 1A-2A setback, building a 24-8 halftime lead.

Cannon School 67, Covenant Day 60: Sophomore Austin Swartz had 19 points and eight assists, and D.J. Nix added 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Cougars. Cannon School is part of a four-way tie for the CISAA lead.

No. 14 Jay M. Robinson 88, Mount Pleasant 47: The Bulldogs scored the game’s first nine points and raced to a 31-11 first-quarter lead, logging a Yadkin Valley 1A-2A rout.

Jesse Carson 61, South Rowan 45: The Cougars trailed by two points at the half but used a second-half surge to win this South Piedmont 3A game. Cam Burleyson and Emory Taylor each scored 13 for the victors.

Lake Norman Charter 60, Northwest Cabarrus 48: James Carswell’s 19 points led the Knights to a South Piedmont 3A victory. Charlie Fox added 13 for the victors.

Monroe 52, Forest Hills 45: The Redhawks won this Rocky River 2A-3A showdown, pulling away in the fourth quarter. Forest Hills (2-1 in conference) had rallied from a 28-18 halftime deficit to tie the game 38-all after three. Monroe is 3-0 in the conference.

North Lincoln 85, West Lincoln 49: The Knights cruised to a nonconference victory, building a 32-13 lead after one quarter.

No. 13 Northside Christian 60, Concord Academy 56: Mychael Mitchell (18 points, five assists) and Wesley Tubbs (13 points, seven rebounds) led Northside to a Metrolina Athletic Conference triumph.

Porter Ridge 85, Sun Valley 70: The Pirates improved to 4-1 in the Southern Carolina 4A and trail Weddington by one game.

South Caldwell 56, Alexander Central 55: Trey Ramsey’s 25 points helped the Spartans (9-4, 2-1) hand the Cougars (14-3, 2-1) their first Northwestern 3A-4A loss. Jordan Bentley added six 3-pointers for South Caldwell and scored 18 points. Alexander Central, which outscored the Spartans 24-16 in the final quarter, got 16 points from Evan Presnell.

Stuart Cramer 67, Forestview 66: Jacob Joyner’s two free throws in the final minute provided the Storm (13-1, 4-1) with the margin of victory in this Big South 3A game. Forestview had taken a 60-55 lead with three minutes left on Nathaniel Aguilar’s 3-pointer, but the Storm rallied. West Stanly 83, Anson County 39: Jacob Lisk poured in 30 points as the Colts moved into a second-place tie in the Rocky River 2A-3A with Forest Hills.

GIRLS

No. 13 Alexander Central 63, South Caldwell 32: Julianna Walter’s 20 points led the Cougars (14-2, 2-1) to a Northwestern 3A-4A victory. Madeleine Jenkins added 10 points and nine rebounds for the victors. Olivia Miller scored 19 for South Caldwell (9-3, 1-2).

No. 15 East Rutherford 73, R-S Central 43: Alayna Watkins scored 21 points, leading the unbeaten Cavaliers (15-0, 5-0) to a big Mountain Foothills 2A victory.

Forestview 48, Stuart Cramer 37: The Jaguars took this Big South 3A game by outscoring the Storm 20-5 in the final quarter. Kendall Manning scored 21 for Forestview. Daria Harris had 14 points and 16 rebounds for Stuart Cramer.

Jesse Carson 68, South Rowan 56: Camden Corley’s 17 points paced the Cougars (13-3, 6-1) to a South Piedmont 3A victory. Bethany Rymer poured in 26 points for South Rowan.

North Gaston 43, South Point 41: Lexi Birstwistle’s 17 points and seven rebounds carried North Gaston to a Big South 3A victory.

Northwest Cabarrus 57, Lake Norman Charter 51: The Trojans (9-1, 5-1) built a 44-23 lead after three quarters in this South Piedmont 3A game and held off a late surge by the Knights.

Providence Day stops rival Country Day Wednesday

Providence Day’s boys basketball team remained in first place in the CISAA conference with a 58-51 win over Charlotte Country Day on the road Tuesday.

The Chargers (15-5, 2-1) are tied with Charlotte Latin (16-2, 2-1), Cannon School (9-11, 2-1) and Charlotte Christian (11-9, 2-1) in a hotly contested race for the conference title.

Tuesday, UNC-Greensboro signee Donovan Atwell had 16 points and six rebounds for Providence Day and Quave Propst-Allison (12 points) and Riley Allenspach (10) also reached double figures. Dallas Gardner had 23 for Country Day (13-8, 0-2), which lost its second straight game.
