Weddington rises to national top 25
In the latest Fab. 50 national ranking, Weddington High School has moved into the top 25, rare for a traditonal public school.
Weddington is No. 24, highest among all N.C. teams except No. 22 Greensboro Day. Combine Academy, from Lincolnton, is No. 39 and Wilmington’s New Hanover HIgh is No. 43. York Prep (SC) is ranked No. 48.
Central Cabarrus converts a ‘helter-skelter’ defense into a thing of beauty
Let’s be honest. It looks a bit chaotic, the way Central Cabarrus plays defense.
Vikings’ head coach James Baker acknowledges that.
“I guess it must seem rather helter-skelter,” says Baker, a veteran of three decades in high school and college coaching. “But there’s a system to it.”
The Vikings defend every inbounds pass. They force opponents to spend a ton of energy, just moving the ball across halfcourt.
And usually, it ends up like it did Tuesday night, when Central Cabarrus trounced visiting Concord 90-65 in what was, essentially, a South Piedmont 3A Conference boys’ basketball showdown.
The Vikings, now 17-0 overall and 7-0 in the conference, forced Concord into 32 turnovers – 20 of which were steals. Baker’s team converted most of those steals into layups.
Concord outrebounded Central Cabarrus 43-23, but the statistic was meaningless. The turnovers and converted fast-break baskets meant a lot more.
“These kids are bright,” says Baker, who spent 19 years as head coach at Catawba College and is in his fourth season at Central Cabarrus. “They have such good basketball IQ. They anticipate the pass. They know where to be.”
The Vikings did not pile up the steals Tuesday against a weak opponent. Concord is 13-3, 4-2, and the Spiders are strong around the basket.
Brayden Blue and James Smith, combined, made 13-of-22 from the floor in the game.
But the Viking defense made it very difficult for coach Barrett Krueger’s team to get the ball where they wanted it.
The Central Cabarrus machine is fueled by Chase and Carson Daniel, 5-9 sophomore twins who aren’t afraid to go toe-to-toe with 6-6 defenders for a rebound but also are lightning-quick on their feet and love to pick off opponents’ passes.
“The county built us a new weight room,” Baker says. “When we started, the twins could press about 50 pounds. Now they’re lifting 150.”
“Now our kids are bouncing off people, when they used to get knocked down,” Baker says.
Concord (13-3, 4-2) is the conference’s second-best team.
The Spiders battled early and trailed 12-10 midway through the first quarter.
But Central Cabarrus forced six turnovers, converting each into a basket and racing out to a 25-10 advantage. The game was never close again.
“We were actually a tad rusty tonight,” Baker says. “It was our first game in 11 days.”
It didn’t look that way in the first quarter. The Vikings hit 12-of-18 from the floor and bolted to a 27-18 lead. They missed some 3-point shots in the second quarter but then made 11-of-18 from the floor in the third quarter.
“It’s a fun team to coach,” Baker says. “In the last two seasons, I think I had to raise my voice only twice. They’re really a good bunch of kids, and they love the game. They make coaching fun.”
THREE WHO MATTERED
Jaiden Thompson, Central Cabarrus: A 6-0 junior guard, Thompson scored a game-high 23 points and added five assists and six steals.
Carson Daniel, Central Cabarrus: Daniel added six assists and seven steals to his 14 points.
James Smith, Concord: A 6-1 junior forward, Smith had a double-double, with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
WORTH MENTIONING
▪ James Baker’s arrived at Central Cabarrus for the 2017-18 season, and his team finished 4-17. Then came a 6-19 season before Baker turned things around. The Vikings were 17-10 in 2019-20, followed by 12-2 in the COVID-shortened 2020-21 season.
▪ Don’t expect much of a dropoff from the Vikings next season. They start three juniors and two sophomores. Only two players on the roster are seniors.
▪ When Concord was able to get the ball over the time line, the Spiders shot well. They made 27-of-51 from the floor for 53 percent. Central Cabarrus hit 34-of-69 for 49 percent.
WHAT’S NEXT
Each team resumes South Piedmont 3A play Thursday. Concord is home against West Rowan, while Central Cabarrus hosts Northwest Cabarrus.

No. 7 Providence Day gets going late, stops Christian in CISAA showdown
The Providence Day Chargers and Charlotte Christian Knights basketball teams each came into Tuesday night’s CISAA matchup at 3-1 in the conference. Providence Day emerged with a hard-fought 43-39 victory to claim first place in the conference for now.
After Christian rallied from a seven-point deficit to tie the game at 38 with 2:51 to play, Providence Day’s defense clamped down and Chargers point guard Quave Propst-Allison came up big.
Allison scored on a layup for a 40-38 Chargers’ advantage with 35 seconds left, and his two late-game free throws second later iced the game for the Chargers.
“With my experience I’ve learned that you have to move on to the next shot,” said Propst-Allison. “I used my aggressiveness and my instincts to go to the basket to make a layup, and then the next possession get fouled and make the free throws.”
Propst-Allison finished with nine points along with Jaxon Prunty who also had nine. Donavan Atwell led Providence Day in scoring with 14. Charlotte Christian had two players in double figures with Bryce Cash finishing with a game-high 18 points, while Cade Preston chipped in with 12 points.
“It was a tough game,” said Chargers’ coach Ron Johnson. “Charlotte Christian’s a great team and Coach Brown (Shonn Brown) does a great job with those guys. They’re a tough defensive team and a very physical team. I feel good and our guys really dug in and fought. We had to do that in order to win tonight.”
THREE WHO MATTERED
Quave Propst–Allison, Providence Day: Scored game-winning basket with 35 seconds left and added two late-game free throws to ice the game.
Cade Preston, Charlotte Christian: Had six first-quarter points to fuel the Knights fast start and 12-8 first-quarter lead.
Donavan Atwell, Providence Day: Lead the Chargers in scoring with 14 points including four, 3-pointers.
WORTH MENTIONING
▪ Providence Day and Charlotte Christian will play their rematch in their final games of the regular season February 11 at Charlotte Christian.
▪ The Chargers game with Charlotte Christian was their second in as many days, with makeup games due to the recent snow and ice causing them to play back-to-back, Monday and Tuesday. Providence Day will also play Friday which will give them three games in five days this week
▪ Tuesday’s win over the Knights was Providence Day’s fourth conference win in a row
WHAT’S NEXT: Charlotte Christian will host Covenant Day Friday at 7 p.m. while Providence Day plays on the road Friday at Cannon School in Concord at 7 p.m.
THEY SAID IT: “I think about our conference and its really, really tough. If our guys can compete really hard in the conference, and you’re playing some really competitive games, I think it helps you out in the state tournament.” Providence Day coach Ron Johnson assessing how his team is performing leading up to the upcoming playoffs in three weeks.
