Thursday’s High School Rewind: Mooresville holds off Lake Norman in Iredell rivalry

It was the game of the year, so far, in Iredell County, and for awhile it looked like Mooresville run away and win easy.

But the Blue Devils had to withstand a big fourth quarter comeback from Lake Norman, their arch rivals, and didn’t secure their 76-75 win until Lake Norman missed a potential game-winning free throw in the final seconds.

“You never know what’s going to happen on rivalry night,” said Blue Devil Head Coach Armand Moore, whose team led by 14 at halftime. “Our guys came out and played Mooresville basketball. I’m so proud of all of them.”

Moore’s team pushed its lead to 65-52 to start the fourth quarter, before Lake Norman got hot.

But Lake Norman outscored Mooresville 23-11 in the fourth quarter. Mooresville held on because guard KC Shaw led the way down the stretch, hitting clutch free throws to take a two-point lead in the finals seconds.

Lake Norman had a chance to tie the game at the free-throw line with just over five seconds to play but a Blue Devil missed the second shot off the back iron.

Fittingly, Shaw grabbed the rebound.

“We know they have some guards who can shoot it, so we told our guys not to give up any three’s,” Moore said. “If they do drive, be there for the help side and take a charge.”

This was just part one of what promises to be a great two-game series between these two longtime rivals. The two will square off again on Feb. 11 in what will be the final game of the regular season for both teams.

THREE WHO MADE A DIFFERENCE

KC Shaw, Mooresville: Shaw totaled 30 points on the night and hit the clutch free throws down the stretch to ultimately win the game.

“This dude right here (Shaw) is the guy,” coach Moore said.

Said Shaw: “I’m just playing my game and whenever I take a shot I am wide open. I don’t force anything. I try to get my teammates the ball and tell them to stay in the game.”

Christian Herring, Mooresville: Herring had 22 points on the night as well as 11 rebounds. Many of the Blue Devils’ second-chance points came from his offensive rebounds. He got in foul trouble later in the game preventing him from being on the floor much, but when he was he was efficient.

Davis Wagner, Lake Norman: Wagner was a big part of the Lake Norman comeback effort in the fourth quarter. He had 27 points in the game, 11 of which came in the fourth quarter. The team tried to get him the ball in the closing minutes but were denied.

WORTH MENTIONING

This game was played very physically and as a result, both teams shot a large number of free throws. Lake Norman had 23 free throw attempts while Mooresville had 27.

KC Shaw did not miss a single free throw attempt in the fourth quarter. He only missed two on the night.

WHAT’S NEXT

Mooresville improves to 15-1 on the season and only has one loss in conference play coming to Cox Mill. The Blue Devils will host South Iredell on Feb. 1 at 7 p.m. Lake Norman falls to 12-6 on the season and 3-4 in Greater Metro 4A play. They will host West Cabarrus on Jan. 28 also at 7 p.m.

Lake Norman’s girls stop rival Mooresville

After a bit of a shaky start, Lake Norman got things going when their star guard Kirsten Lewis-Williams got going in a 60-38 win.

The Wildcats jumped out to a 20-8 lead after the first quarter and would not look back as Lewis-Williams would finish with 14 points and 10 assists on the game.

“Mooresville is a cross-town rival,” Lewis-Williams said. “Coming into this game, no matter what they are ranked or what their record is, we knew we had to come out from the jump because games like this can go either way with the environment.”
