No. 2 Chambers holds off No. 4 North Meck in OT

After trailing for most of the game, Chambers made a late fourth-quarter push to send Friday’s game with rival North Meck into overtime.

And then South Carolina commit Daniel Sanford came up big.

He had four points in the extra period, 31 for the game, and led the Cougars to a 75-73 win, cementing a regular-season sweep of their rivals from Huntersville.

“It was what was expected,” Cougars’ Head Coach Brian Frasier said after the game. “People got their money’s worth tonight. We played tough and they played tough. They are a good team and that is why it went into overtime.”

The first quarter was everything fans could have hoped for -- a lot of physicality and pace. Sanford came out hot, with 10 points in the first quarter. Still, it took a late three-point basket by Jaylen Curry for Chambers to tie the game at 15 at the end of the period.

In the second quarter, North Mecklenburg appeared to be running away, led by College of Charleston recruit Jordan Crawford. But Chambers was able to go in at halftime just down five.

The third quarter was all but a carbon copy of the second as North Mecklenburg would jump out quickly out of the halftime break, only to allow the Cougars to fight their way back. Curry did not start the second half due to foul trouble but came back in and immediately got an assist to Sanford.

Coming out in the fourth quarter, the Vikings looked poised to maintain their lead matching the Cougars shot for shot. But after a steal by Curry, Nick Ward hit the biggest shot of the game to tie the game late in the fourth. Curry would secure another loose ball and have a good look to win the game in regulation, but it was not to be.

Overtime was a defensive battle. After being knotted at 68 apiece, Chambers would score just seven points in the extra period, but apair of late free throws by Sanford capped off the comeback win. After trailing by more than 15 at one point in the first half, the Cougars found a way to come back again and get the win.

“I am happy we came out with the win,” coach Frasier said. “They executed some things and started off well, but we were able to come out down the stretch, get some things done, and get the win.”

For Sanford, this is his second 30 plus point performance against the Vikings this season. For him, this rivalry is personal, and he is elated that his team was able to get the regular-season sweep after losing to the Vikings his previous three seasons.

“Get back,” Sanford exclaimed. “It’s been three years, and they have been sweeping us so it feels good to get them back.”

THREE WHO MADE A DIFFERENCE

Daniel Sanford, Chambers: Sanford had 31 points in the game, but what goes unnoticed is his defense in this game. He got in the passing lane and forced a lot of Viking turnovers in the game. His free throw shooting ended up being a big difference-maker in this game as well.

Jordan Crawford, North Mecklenburg: Crawford had 29 points to lead the Vikings. He put his team on his back down the stretch of the fourth quarter to try and prevent the Cougar comeback but fell just short in the end.

Jaylen Curry, Chambers: After not playing much of the second and third quarter due to foul trouble, Curry came out in the fourth very aggressive on both sides of the ball. He was able to get to the rim and the free-throw line in the fourth. He got a big steal which led to the game-tying three-point basket as well.

WORTH MENTIONING

These two could meet twice more -- in the conference tournament championship game and in the playoffs.

After missing his first four free throws, Cougar big man Maurio Hanson went 4-for-4 down the stretch of the game.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Chambers moves to 16-5 on the season and a perfect 9-0 in conference play. They will travel to Mallard Creek on Feb. 7 at 7:30 p.m. For North Mecklenburg, they fall to 18-4 and 8-2 in conference play. They will host Hopewell on Feb. 8, also at 7:30 p.m.
