No. 1 Myers Park gets scare from a South Meck team that wouldn’t quit

Myers Park was cruising along Tuesday night, looking very much like the girls’ basketball team that hadn’t lost to a North Carolina opponent this season and had piled up an 8-0 conference record.

Yes, the Mustangs, No. 1 in the Sweet 16, were dominating No. 8 South Mecklenburg … until they suddenly weren’t.

The Sabres, playing at home, somehow got the idea that they could rally from a 31-14 deficit, and they did just that.

In the end, Myers Park regained the lead, made a lot of free throws down the stretch, and beat South Mecklenburg 57-45, clinching the South Meck 4A Conference regular-season championship.

But the Mustangs learned a few lessons.

“Among other things, we learned that we need to stay mentally sharp in a hostile atmosphere,” said Mustangs’ coach Barbara Nelson, whose team improved to 18-5, 9-0. “And I think we learned the importance of making the little plays.

“We tried too much to make big plays, when just the little things – layups and rebounds – were all we needed.”

Myers Park kept the sellout crowd quiet for about two-thirds of the game. Even the Mustangs’ sizeable contingent stayed rather calm, watching the Mustangs’ machine-like operation.

Myers Park led 16-3 after one quarter and was up 27-14 at the half.

The Sabres (18-3, 7-2) made 1-of-10 from the floor in the opening quarter and 6-of-27 for the first half.

Myers Park’s lead reached 31-14 on two Mia Xerras free throws with 6:13 left in the third quarter.

Then the Sabres started scoring.

They scored nine in a row and had a 21-3 run that culminated with Anastasia Sinclair’s go-ahead layup with 1:11 left in the third quarter. That put South Mecklenburg ahead 35-34 and had the Sabres’ crowd making plenty of noise.

“We’ve played tough competition this year,” said Nelson, whose team suffered all its losses against rugged opposition from South Carolina, Maryland, Virginia and Tennessee. “We knew South Meck would give us everything they had. We knew Coach Mitchell (Sabres’ head coach Cristie Mitchell) would have a good game plan.”

The lead see-sawed into the fourth quarter, but the Mustangs went ahead to stay 40-39 on a pair of Anna Giannopoulou free throws with 5:46 remaining.

South Meck was within 45-43 with 3:20 to go, but the Sabres missed several shots down the stretch and were forced to foul the Mustangs. Myers Park made 9-of-12 from the foul line in the closing 90 seconds.

“We missed several layups that could have made a difference, and we committed a lot of silly fouls,” Nelson said. “We didn’t play smart basketball at times, but after our time out early in the fourth quarter, we settled down.

“Winning a game like this will help us, down the road.”

THREE WHO MATTERED

Mia Xerras, Myers Park: A 5-6 junior point guard, Xerras hit 6-of-10 from the floor, including four three pointers, and scored a team-high 18 points. She also grabbed nine rebounds.

Senali Moss, South Mecklenburg: Moss, the Sabres’ standout senior guard, scored a game-high 19 points. It wasn’t her best shooting night of the season (6-of-18), but she was double-teamed much of the time and managed to score 10 points in her team’s big third quarter.

Kamara Cannie, Myers Park: Cannie scored only three points and grabbed two rebounds, but Nelson said she came in at point guard and enabled Xerras to move from the point to the shooting guard position. That gave Myers Park more firepower in the fourth quarter.

WORTH MENTIONING

Myers Park has now won 11 in a row. The Mustangs are 18-0 against North Carolina competition.

South Mecklenburg’s performance Tuesday night was a far cry from the teams’ first meeting, back on Jan. 11. Myers Park won that game 65-29.

Myers Park hit 17-of-35 from the floor for 48 percent shooting. The Mustangs had a so-so night from the foul line, making 18-of-31. But they piled up a 42-22 rebounding bulge over the Sabres.

South Mecklenburg shot 28 percent from the floor, making 15-of-53. It was the second game in as many nights for the Sabres, who beat Cuthbertson on Monday night.

The girls-boys doubleheader was a sellout, and about 75 fans were standing outside the door at the start of the boys’ game, hoping to get in.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Myers Park finishes its regular season Friday against visiting Olympic. South Mecklenburg finishes Friday at home against Harding. Both of those are South Meck 4A games.
