Thursday’s HS Rewind: Carmel Christian coach gets historic win, MAC title games set

Carmel Christian nets 100 for coach Badgett

Carmel Christian got 18 points from Cade Tyson and 13 from Kyle Bean in a 63-23 win over Victory Christian Thursday. It was coach Joe Badgett’s 100th win in four years as head coach at the school.

As a head coach at Carmel or as an assistant at Carmel and Northside Christian, Badgett has coached in the N.C. state championship game in 10 of the past 11 seasons.

As head coach at Carmel Christian, No. 3 in the Observer’s Sweet 16 currently, Badgett has a career record of 100-14.

Butler gets big win over Providence, sets up championship game

Butler High got 27 points from junior wing Zion McDuffie and 22 from senior Ty Black in a 71-67 win over Providence that put the Bulldogs in position to win the Southwestern 4A championship.

Butler (11-9, 8-3) is tied with Rocky River (12-7, 8-3) for first place. Both teams finish the regular-season Friday. Rocky River hosts Garinger (3-19, 1-10) Friday. Butler plays arch rival Independence (12-10, 6-5) at home. Independence has won five straight games.

Rasheed Baldwin, Cox Mill: game-high 16 points in a 50-45 win over Independence. Cox Mill outscored the Patriots 11-0 in the first half and 24-8 in the first half.

Zeke Cannedy, Kings Mountain: In a win over Hunter Huss, Cannedy scored 46 points in 24 minutes. He also had eight rebounds and seven assists. For the season, Cannedy’s 37.4 scoring average ranks top five in America.

Logan Coffey, East Burke: game-high 22 points in a 55-49 win over Bunker Hill.

Xavier Crawford, Lincoln Charter: game-high 22 points in an 86-47 win over Pine Lake Prep.

Evan Presnell, Alexander Central: scored his 1,000th career point in a 66-47 win over Ashe County. Presnell made 4-of-8 3-point shots and finished with 27 points, five rebounds and five assists Wednesday.

South Meck upsets No. 10 Myers Park

South Mecklenburg really put a damper on Myers Park’s SoMECK conference championship hopes, upsetting the Mustangs 65-62 Tuesday.

Myers Park (13-7, 6-3) fell one game behind Ardrey Kell (15-4, 7-2) heading into Friday’s conference finale. Ardrey Kell plays Berry Friday. Myers Park plays Olympic.

On Tuesday, South Meck won by rallying in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Mustangs 23-16 led by Peter Moye and Bishop Boswell.

Moye had 19 points, five rebounds. Boswell had 29 points, seven rebounds, six assists and is off to a big week. In Monday’s 70-62 win over Cuthbertson, the sophomore wing had 37 points, five rebounds and five assists.

Tuesday’s #BIG5 Top Performers

Amare Bethel, Charlotte Country Day: game-high 20 points in a 80-74 win over Charlotte Christian. Country Day rallied from 13 down and outscored Christian by nine in the fourth quarter.

Bryce Brooks, Independence: game-high 19 points in a 67-37 upset win over Rocky River. Rocky River came into the night in first place in the Southwestern 4A. Charlotte Catholic (14-10, 8-4) and Butler (10-9, 7-3) -- which plays Providence Wednesday -- are right there heading into Friday’s regular-season finale. Rocky River plays Garinger. Catholic is done with league play. Independence plays Butler.

DJ Cuttino, Concord Academy: 14 points, 12 assists in an 80-64 win over Metrolina Christian, his team’s sixth straight victory.

Randall Pettus, Bessemer City: 28 points, 12 assists, eight rebounds, eight steals in a 86-53 win over Highland Tech.

North Iredell 67, East Lincoln 62 ... The visiting Mustangs (19-4, 11-2) rallied from a 55-50 deficit with two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter and sent the game into overtime. But North Iredell dominated overtime, making 4-of-4 free throws in the final minute. The loss dropped East Lincoln to 19-4, 11-2, a half-game behind Hickory.

Gaston Day 90, Hickory Grove Christian 64 ... Callum Richard scored 19 points and Christ Brott added 15 for the Gaston Day, top seed in the tournament. The Spartans’ semifinal foe Thursday will be fourth seed SouthLake Christian, which beat fifth-seeded Gaston Christian 69-68.
