Swimming/track champs: Latin, Myers Park, MICS, Lincoln Charter, Comm. School, Cuthbertson

Myers Park’s girls ran away with the N.C. 4A state swim championships Thursday at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Raleigh.

The Mustangs ran up a total of 264 points, well ahead of Green Hope (216) and Hough (216).

Cardinal Gibbons star Claire Curzan, a US Olympic and Silver Medalist, broke her meet record in the 100 butterfly and was named most outstanding girls swimmer. Curzan, who swam the 100 butterfly in 49.24 seconds, set the national high school record in the 100 backstroke, winning in a time of 49.61 seconds.

On the boys side, Green Hope beat Myers Park by one point -- 202 to 201 -- preventing a Mustangs sweep. Cardinal Gibbons (184) was third.

Michael Cotter of Green Hope was named meet MVP. Cotter won the 200 free and 500 free races.

Charlotte Latin boys win NCISAA state title in swimming

Charlotte Latin won its third striaght NCISAA Division I swimming state title Monday in Greensboro. The Hawks girls finished second to Cary Academy.

On the boys side, Latin ran up 418.5 points, well ahead of Cary Academy (344) and Cannon School (222.5). Cary Academy’s girls (371) was a clear winner over Latin (234) and Charlotte Country Day (223).

Here are notable Charlotte Latin swims:

  • Freshman Norvy Clontz earned All State as the 500 freestyle champion in the 500 freestyle. He swam in a school-record tiime of 4:32.07
  • Sophomore Ivy Monk earned All-State as the 100 breastroke champion (1:04.95)
  • The boys’ 400 freestyle relay of James Harper, Wiley Spinner, Aidan Hill, and Levani Tutovani earned All-State as champions in school-record time of 3:08.42
  • The girls’ 200 medley relay of Charley Floyd, Ivy Monk, Lila Connor, and Dorothy Patterson placed second and broke a Latin school record, finishing in 1:48.76.

Cuthbertson girls dominate 4A indoor track -- again

Cuthbertson’s girls won their fifth straight N.C. indoor track and field championship Saturday. And the boys won, too.

Cuthbertson ran up 91 points on the girls side, easily beating Union County rival Marvin ridge 91-40. And Cuthbertson had a lot of balance, netting just won individual winner - Stella Kermes in the 1,000 meter run.

The Cavaliers 3,200 relay had a new all-class record, beating the second place team from Mount Tabor by 13 seconds. The time of 9:24.12 beat the old record of 9:25.42 set by Leesville Road.

Harding’s Akala Garrett was named meet girls MVP. She won the 55-meter hurdles and the 500-meter run. She was second in the 300. Porter Ridge’s Jacob Laney won distance events and was named boys MVP.

Carrboro boys, girls sweep 3A swimming

Carrboro’s boys and girls swept the N.C. 3A state championships Friday at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Raleigh.

Carrboro’s boys had a total of 218 points. Northwest Cabarrus (183) and Lake Norman Charter (176) finished second and third. In the girls meet, Carrboro ran away with 306 points. Greenville’s JH Rose (233) was second, followed by Northwood (225). Lake Norman Charter was the highest area team, finishing fourth (129).

Two area performers won two titels: Parkwood’s Maddie Geyer won the 200 IM and the 100 breast on the girls sidde. Concord’s Matthew Lucky won the 200 IM and the 100 breast.

Lincoln Charter, Community School win 1A/2A Swimming

The Lincoln Charter girls swim won its first state championship Saturday, holding off Pine Lake Prep, and Community School of Davidson won its first boys crown.

For Community School, Baylor Nelson was named the Most Outstanding Swimmer after he broke his won 200 IM record in 1:43.56, the fourth fastest time ever reported in a high school meet according to the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Record Book. He also set a new 1A/2A State Meet Record in the 100 Butterfly (47.88) to beat his old mark (48.15 set in 2021).

Nelson also swam on two winning relay teams.

There was one other double individual event State Champion, Reid Miller from Bradford Prep who claimed victory in the two fastest events of the meet, the 50 Freestyle and 100 Freestyle. Miller touched in 20.67 seconds in the 50 Free and posted a winning time of 45.18 seconds in the 100.

Lincoln Charter’s girls got the win powered by a 200 free win from Grace Wilson. Wilson also swam with Brooklyn DeCann, Gianna D’Amato, and Jade Chamblee for a second place 400 relay finish.

Mountain Island Charter wins NC 1A/2A indoor track

Mountain Island Charter won the N.C. 1A/2A indoor state track championship Friday. Burlington’s Cumming High was second.

Swain County won the girls title, edging Community School of Davidson by one point.

East Burke’s Kenneth Byrd won the high jump and pole vault. Mountain Island Charter’s Trevin Moyer won the 55- and 500-meter runs. Moyer, named boys meet MVP, set new state records in both of his events.

West Mecklenburg star Sanu Jallow won two events at the N.C. 3A indoor track championships Saturday, winning the 55- and 500-meter runs.

Croatan won the boys and girls team titles.
