Saturday’s Girls Rewind: Cannon School advances, Providence Day falls in NCISAA playoffs

Providence Day was arguably the better team for three quarters of its N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association quarterfinal game Saturday night against visiting Wesleyan Christian.

That wasn’t enough, though, as Wesleyan did enough damage in the third quarter to end the Chargers’ season 40-35.

Providence Day (21-4) led 21-11 at the half and seemed headed for the 4A semifinals.

But the Trojans (18-6) outscored the Chargers 18-4 in the third quarter, then held off a Providence Day rally in the fourth quarter.

“They really turned up the intensity,” Providence Day coach Josh Springer said of the Trojans. “Their defense forced some turnovers, and they took advantage.”

The Chargers’ rally didn’t really start until the final four minutes. Trailing 34-27, Providence Day got back in the game with successive baskets by Chandler Brooks, Lauren Jensen and Addy Holgorsen, one of two seniors on the roster.

A Holgorsen basket with seven seconds left cut Wesleyan’s lead to 36-35, but the Chargers were forced to foul, and the Trojans made four free throws in the closing seconds.

“I hate it for this team,” Springer said. “They believed in each other all season. It was an outstanding 20-win-plus season.”

Holgorsen, headed to Clemson on a soccer scholarship, led the Chargers with 11 points.

Wesleyan, a High Point school which won both its meetings with Providence Day this season, got 22 points from Lily Pereira. She scored 11 of her team’s 18 points in the third quarter.
