Big Day for Mecklenburg County teams Saturday

On the biggest day of the high school basketball season so far, Mecklenburg County teams had a big day.

Four county boys teams advanced to the NCHSAA regional semifinals Tuesday. Two girls teams advanced and two boys teams won NCISAA state championships.

In the public school playoffs, Chambers, Myers Park and North Mecklenburg are heading to the regional semifinals Tuesday.

Chambers will play at nationally ranked Weddington. Myers Park will play at North Mecklenburg.

In 3A, West Charlotte beat North Iredell and advanced to play a regional semifinal at Greensboro’s Ben L. Smith Tuesday.

On the girls side, Charlotte Catholic and Chambers advanced. Catholic will host Lake Norman Tuesday. Chambers will play at ‘All-NC’ No. 1 Northern Guilford.

In the private schools, Carmel Christian upset nationally ranked Greensboro Day to win the NCISAA 4A championship, and after losing in the 1A finals last season, United Faith beat Greenfield School to win the title this season.

Jaylen Curry, Chambers: 14 points, seven assists, three steals and two rebounds in a 59-49 win over Grimsley in the third round of the NC 4A playoffs.

Aaliyah El, Chambers girls: 13 points, two rebounds, two steals and two assists in a 66-36 win over AC Reynolds. Teammates Mila Holloway (11 points, four steals, three assists), Jazlyn Harris (10 points, four steals) and Trinity Moreland (8 points, five rebounds, two blocks) also had strong games.

Cassidy Geddes, Newton-Conover girls: 34 points, eight steals, three rebounds and made 5-of-7 3-point shots in a 60-55 third round playoff loss at East Surry.

Landon King, West Charlotte: 14 points, seven rebounds in a 70-33 win over North Iredell.

Cade Tyson, Carmel Christian: game-high 33 points in a 71-65 win over nationally ranked Greensboro Day in the N.C. Independent Schools 4A state championship game.
