Thursday’s Spring Sports Rewind: Carmel Christian ends NC’s longest win streak.
North Carolina’s longest high school baseball streak came to an end Thursday evening when Carmel Christian handed host Hickory Grove Christian a 7-2 setback.
The Lions hadn’t lost since the third game of the 2021 season, compiling a 27-0-1 record during that stretch.
According to Maxpreps, it was the country’s seventh-longest unbeaten string in baseball.
Hickory Grove Christian, which won the private schools 3A state championship last season, captured its opener this season and then played to an extra-inning tie Wednesday against Cuthberton.
On Thursday, Carmel Christian dominated, behind the hitting of Colin Poole and Aidan Christmas. Poole homered and drove in two runs, and Christmas drove in three runs.
Conner Barrazino and Jordan Rowell each had two hits for Hickory Grove Christian.

Providence Day scored a victory Wednesday over Metrolina Christian (313-319) at Cedarwood Country Club, with Jason Zawlocki (72) and Spencer Turtz (73) leading the way. On Thursday, the Chargers won a three-way meet at Pine Lake Country Club, scoring 157 to Hickory Ridge’s 177 and Covenant Day’s 198. This was a nine-hole event, and Jack LaPiana and Thomas Heath led the Chargers with 37’s.

LAKE NORMAN MEET
Mooresville swept the boys’ and girls’ competition in a four-team Greater Metro 4 4A meet at Lake Norman. The Blue Devil boys finished with 74 points, trailed by A.L. Brown (79), Lake Norman (63) and Cox Mill (58). Mooresville’s Treyvon Birchett won the 200-meter dash and 300 hurdles, and A.L. Brown’s Daunt Marshall won the 100 meters and the 110 hurdles.
Girls’ team scores: Mooresville 113.5; Cox Mill 73.5; Lake Norman 48; A.L. Brown 19. Mooresville’s Kendal Hudson was a triple-winner, taking the 110 and 300 hurdles and the long jump.
ANSON COUNTY MEET
The Sun Valley boys and Piedmont girls won this four-team meet. Sun Valley’s boys finished with 100 points, followed by Union Academy (59), Piedmont (37) and Anson County (24). Sun Valley’s Grant Leach won the 100 and 200 dashes.
Piedmont’s girls finished with 70.5 points, followed by Union Academy (58), Sun Valley (38.5) and Anson County (27). Anson’s Angelica Lugo took three events – the 110 and 300 hurdles, and the triple jump.

Thursday’s Rewind: Cuthbertson, Weddington track get wins
Cuthbertson’s girls and the Weddington boys were team victors Tuesday in a five-team track and field meet hosted by Cuthbertson and featuring several outstanding teams.
Also competing were Porter Ridge, Charlotte Catholic and Mountain Island Charter.
Cuthbertson is defending 3A state champion in both boys’ and girls’ competition; the Mountain Island Charter boys are defending 1A boys’ champions; Weddington is a traditional power; and both Charlotte Catholic and Porter Ridge are expected to contend in several events at the state level this season.
Cuthbertson’s girls and boys also were recent winners of 4A indoor track and field championships.
The Cuthbertson girls finished with 248.25 points, followed by Weddington (184.25); Mountain Island Charter (79); Charlotte Catholic (65); and Porter Ridge (53.5).
Weddington’s boys edged Cuthbertson 222.67 to 205.33, followed by Mountain Island Charter (99), Porter Ridge (68) and Charlotte Catholic (49).
In the girls’ competition, double-winners were Weddington’s Madison Moraja (200 and 400 meter dashes); Cuthbertson’s Alanna Churchill (100 and 300 meter hurdles); Charlotte Catholic’s Lauren Grose (long jump, triple jump); and Cuthbertson’s Elizabeth Sawicki (shot put, discus).
Mountain Island Charter’s Jaida McGrew won the 100 dash and anchored her team’s winning 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams.

Tuesday’s Rewind: Grand slam lifts Marvin Ridge past Ardrey Kell
Jacob Terwilliger delivered the big hit Tuesday in a meeting of Charlotte-area 4A baseball powers.
Terwilliger, a senior outfielder for Marvin Ridge, smacked a grand slam in the bottom of the fifth inning and provided the decisive run in the Mavericks’ 6-5 victory over Ardrey Kell.
His hit spoiled the Ardrey Kell head coaching debut of Sean Thomas, a former Providence High assistant who became head coach of the Knights last year following the departure of Hal Bagwell.
The Knights had taken a 3-2 lead with two runs in the top of the fifth before Terwilliger deliver.
Marvin Ridge starter Trent Boone got the victory, with Kyle Dobos recording a save.
Meeting of champions
Lake Norman Charter won a battle of defending girls’ soccer state champions, blanking Community School of Davidson 5-0.
The Knights took a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute, on a goal by Reese Robinson. Eliza Rich scored three times for Lake Norman Charter in the first half. Imani Anyaza got a clean sheet in goal for Lake Norman Charter.
The Knights are defending 2A champions but playing at the 3A level this year. Community School of Davidson took the 1A girls’ title last year but is playing at 2A this spring.

Hough 8, Myers Park 6: Simone Mack got the victory on the mound, with Morgan Flowe recording a save. Blythe Phillips led Myers Park, slamming two home runs and driving in four runs.
Pine Lake Prep 10, Lake Norman Charter 0: Winning pitcher Kristen Armstrong tossed a three-hitter and fanned six, and Ashley Marchitelli scored twice and drove in two runs.
Queens Grant Charter 21, Langtree Charter 4: The Stallions scored 11 times in the top of the first inning. Abi Sawyer had a huge day, driving in 10 runs with a double, triple and two home runs. Liz Finter had three hits and scored five times.

Alexander Central 9, Maiden 0: Winning pitcher Faith Carrigan worked five innings, allowing two hits and striking out 11. She also went 3-for-4 at the plate, driving in three runs. Peyton Price added three hits.

Charlotte Catholic 5, South Mecklenburg 4: Ethan Boswell and Luke Thompson won No. 1 and 2 singles for South Mecklenburg, but the Cougars took three other singles matches and two in doubles for the victory. Charlotte Catholic’s Dillon Thailer took an especially close match in No. 3 singles, downing Gus Senn 7-5, 2-6, 1-0 (10-5).
Porter Ridge 6, East Mecklenburg 3: The Pirates captured this Southwestern 4A match, as Porter Ridge’s Nate Latimir swept Oliver Wilson 6-0, 6-1 in No. 1 singles. Latimir and Micah Martin teamed for an 8-1 victory over Wilson and Ryan Schang in No. 1 doubles. East Mecklenburg’s Scott Gates edged William Higgins 6-2, 7-6 in No. 2 singles.
St. Stephens 9, Alexander Central 0: Ajay Swisher won No. 1 singles, Blake Walker took No. 2 singles, and the pair teamed to win No. 1 doubles for St. Stephens.
Boys’ golf
Lake Norman Charter captured a South Piedmont 3A match at McCanless Golf Club in Salisbury. The Knights, who competed at the 2A level the last three years, has not lost a conference golf match in four years.
Will Dalton shot a 35, good for third place overall and leading Lake Norman Charter. The top two individuals were East Rowan’s Jaden Sprinkle (32) and Landon Merrel (34).

Monday’s Rewind: Covenant Day baseball stops Gaston Day
Weston Shoudy pitched two-hit ball over 4.2 innings Monday and led Covenant Day to a 11-1 victory over visiting Gaston Day.
Shoudy, a junior righthander, struck out nine and allowed just one unearned run.
Meanwhile, the Lions touched Gaston Day’s five pitchers for 11 hits, and they took advantage of seven errors by the Spartans.
Shortstop Will Boyce slammed a two-run double, and right-fielder Evan Hempe had two singles and a triple. He scored twice and drove in a run.
Baseball
Bandys 10, Freedom 0: Parker DeHart had three hits, scored four times, and drove in two runs. And Alex Robinson had three hits and three RBI.
Central Cabarrus 5, West Cabarrus 1 (8 innings): The Vikings scored four runs in the top of the eighth for this season-opening victory. Starting pitcher Christian Tucker went 4.2 innings and struck out 12. Aiden Kwon had three hits for the victors, and Brendan Fulcher drove in two runs.
Highland Tech 19, Piedmont Community Charter 9: The Rams scored nine times in the top of the fifth inning and rolled. Liam Fulbright scored four runs and drove in four, and Gavin Blackwood had two hits and scored three runs.
Hough 3, Lake Norman 2 (8 innings): Visiting Lake Norman tied the game with two runs in the top of the seventh, but the Huskies got a walk-off run in the bottom of the eighth.
Independence 11, Olympic 7: Winning pitcher Tyler Spicer worked five innings and didn’t allow an earned run. Jake Stanley went 2-for-3, scoring twice, driving in two runs, and stealing three bases. Luke Chantry added two hits and walked twice.
Newton-Conover 6, Statesville 5: Freshman Owen Cannon got the win in relief for the Red Devils.
Salisbury 10, North Hills Christian 6: Senior starter Koley Burleyson got relief help from freshman Evan Koontz and Hank Webb, lifting the Hornets to a victory. Burleyson and Webb each pitched three innings, and Koontz threw for one inning.
Shelby 5, Stuart Cramer 2: Shelby held the Storm to two hits.

Central Academy 18, Concord 0: Katelyn Easterly went 3-for-4, and Kaitlyn Zuendel and Anna Croom each added two hits for the victors.
Charlotte Country Day 12, Gaston Christian 1: Ciarra Farrer went 2-for-3 and scored three runs, and Denny Celeste was 2-for-3 with four RBI in the Buccaneers home victory. Country Day totaled 10 hits.

Mount Pleasant 6, Gray Stone Day 3: Jadon Carnes beat John Seutilles 6-0, 6-1 in No. 1 singles, getting the Tigers off to a victorious start. Gonzalo Gomez (No. 2) and Ryder Carnes (No. 3) also posted singles victories for Mount Pleasant. The tightest match was No. 4 singles, where Gray Stone Day’s Wes Plyler edged Jackson Broadway 4-6, 6-2, 10-7.
