Tuesday’s Rewind: 4 Mecklenburg County teams advance to NCHSAA regional finals
Tuesday was a big night for Mecklenburg County high school basketball teams.
Two boys and two girls teams advanced to the N.C. regional championship games, or state semifinals.
▪ North Mecklenburg’s boys ran out to a big lead against Myers Park, denying the Mustangs their first N.C. 4A regional championship berth since 1966. North Meck won 91-73. North Meck will play nationally ranked Weddington in Saturday’s regional championship game.
▪ In 3A, West Charlotte’s boys zipped past Greensboro’s Ben L. Smith 81-66 to set up a showdown with unbeaten Central Cabarrus Saturday. On Tuesday, the Lions got 20 points from senior Chance Morrow, 17 from Landon King, 14 from Chadlyn Traylor and 11 from Josh Mahatha.
▪ In 4A girls play, Chambers beat the state’s top ranked team, Northern Guilford, handing Northern its first loss of the season. Chambers won 49-34 with a dominant defensive performance and will play Charlotte Catholic Saturday to try to earn a spot in the finals. Chambers is trying to reach a third straight state championship game.
Catholic was in its first regional game since 2010 and beat Lake Norman 48-41. The Cougars will play its first ever regional championship game Saturday.
The NCHSAA is expected to announce regional sites Wednesday morning.

Alanis Diaz, Charlotte Catholic girls: team-high 13 points in a come-from-behind 48-41 win over Lake Norman in the N.C. 4A state quarterfinals.
Chase Lowe, Weddington: game-high 18 points, including a huge steal and layup in the final minute of his team’s 58-56 win over Chambers in the 4A quarterfinals.
Trinity Moreland, Chambers girls: 16 points, three rebounds, three blocks, three steals in a 49-34 win over Northern Guilford. Chambers -- which got 13 points, five rebounds from Mila Holloway -- is one win away from a shot a third straight N.C. 4A state championship.
Mary Spry, Carson girls: 23 points, 12 rebounds, six assists in a N.C. 3A quarterfinal loss to North Davidson.
Jaiden Thompson, Central Cabarrus: 37 points, nine rebounds, six assists and five steals in an 89-47 win over Enka in the N.C. 3A state quarterfinals. Teammates Chase Daniel (18 points, seven assists) and Gavin Bullock (13 points, nine rebounds, three blocks) had big games.
