Mr. and Ms. Basketball for NC this year come from the Charlotte and Raleigh areas

Carmel Christian’s Cade Tyson and Apex Friendship’s Indya Nivar are Mr. and Ms. Basketball in North Carolina for the 2021-22 high school basketball season.

The Charlotte Observer has handed out the state’s top high school basketball awards since the 1984-85 season.

Tyson, a 6-foot-8 wing, averaged 23 points, 6.1 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.6 steals, leading nationally ranked Carmel Christian to the N.C. Independent Schools 4A state championship. Carmel, ranked No. 1 in the Charlotte Observer Sweet 16 and the “All-NC” poll of the state’s top teams, upset what was then the state’s highest-ranked team in the national polls, Greensboro Day, to win the crown.

Tyson had 31 points in the championship game. He has signed with Belmont.

Tyson’s brother, Hunter, is a senior at Clemson.

“I think he was one of the most improved players from last year to this year,” said Rick Lewis, the founder and president of Phenom Hoop Report, a N.C. scouting service. “He’s an efficient three-point shooter and he’s really improved with creating his shot off the bounce. And outside of being just a great basketball player, he’s an outstanding young man and has his priorities in order. He’s really grounded and could’ve gone to higher level bout went to a level where he could have the most success, at Belmont.”

Nivar, a 5-10 guard, signed with Stanford, averaged 18.9 points, 8.6 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 3.4 steals, leading Apex Friendship (29-2) to its first state championship game. Apex will face Charlotte’s Chambers High for the 4A title Saturday in Chapel Hill.

Nivar, a McDonald’s All-American, was named N.C. Gatorade player of the year Wednesday.

“We’ve talked about Indya Nivar all season,” said Randall Clark, owner of OWE Basketball training. “She’s led Apex Friendship to a state championship. She’s been fantastic, and she’s most deserving.”
