Monday’s Spring Sports Rewind: Hough soccer tops South Meck in matchup of regional powers

Hough High’s soccer team
Hough High’s soccer team

Hough scored on a free kick in the second half Monday night, and that was enough for the top-ranked Huskies to beat South Mecklenburg 1-0, in a match featuring two of the Charlotte area’s top girls’ soccer teams.

Ranked No. 1 by Maxpreps in North Carolina, the Huskies had problems breaking through the Sabres’ defense and goalkeeper Lillian Heaslet.

But Hough (4-0-1) finally scored when Maria Rayburn tipped in Kennedy Bell’s free kick from about 20 yards.

South Mecklenburg (3-1-1) put plenty of pressure on the Hough defense, but Huskies’ goalkeeper Siena Zabek made seven saves and earned a clean sheet.
