Cannon’s Cole Frood, Weddington’s Elektra Koulouris are Observer athletes of the week

A pair of high school lacrosse players are the Charlotte Observer’s boys and girls athletes of the week.

Cannon School’s Cole Frood and Weddington’s Elektra Koulouris won the awards this week after readers cast nearly 100,000 votes between the two polls.

Frood, the boys athlete of the week, is a sophomore attacker who scored three goals and had two assists as Cannon School beat the reigning NCHSAA 4A state runner-up Hough 8-6 on the road March 8.

Frood also one goal and one assist in a 15-7 win over Lake Norman Charter March 10.

Koulouris, the girls athlete of the week, is an All-American midfielder at Weddington. She had 14 goals, two assists and 15 groundballs to lead Weddington to wins over Holly Springs, R.J. Reynolds and South Mecklenburg.

Koulouris scored seven goals to go with one assist and seven groundballs in a 20-9 win over R.J. Reynolds March 7.

She followed that up with a goal and two groundballs in a 20-5 victory over South Mecklenburg March 10.

The next day, Koulouris scored six goals, had one assist and six more groundballs to help the Warriors to an 18-15 win over Holly Springs.

In her first five games this season, Koulouris had 20 goals and 25 groundballs.
