Weddington High School’s boys and Chambers High’s girls are the 2021-22 Charlotte Observer Sweet 16 champions.

Each school will receive a banner to hang in their gym for winning the poll, certifying each team as the best in the Charlotte Observer’s 162-school coverage area in western North Carolina.

Weddington, ranked as high as No. 13 nationally, won the N.C. 4A state championship Saturday, beating Panther Creek 76-68. The Warriors won back-to-back state championships and have won 49 straight games.

The Warriors moved ahead of Carmel Christian in the final poll. Carmel Christian, the N.C. Independent Schools 4A state champion, is ranked as high as No. 15 in the national polls. Carmel beat each of the other three private school state champions — the Burlington School, Concord Academy and United Faith — and lost to only one N.C. team all season, falling to Chambers early in the year. Weddington rallied to beat Chambers in the state quarterfinal round.

Chambers’ girls set a new N.C. record by winning a third straight state championship. It’s also the Cougars’ their third straight Sweet 16 title. Class 2A state champion Salisbury jumped three spots to No. 2 after beating Farmville Central on Saturday.
