Monday’s Prep Rewind: Crest hires football coach; Concord looks for one

Joe L Hughes Courtesy Gaston Gazette

Crest High has filled its head football coaching vacancy.

Now Concord must do the same thing.

Crest has announced the hiring of Jim Sosebee as head football coach. He replaces Nick Eddins, who resigned in January to become head coach at Pinecrest High in Southern Pines.

Meanwhile, Concord head football coach Marty Paxton says he is stepping down after four years in the position.

Crest, a perennial 3A powerhouse in football, is getting a head coach with a track record producing explosive offenses. Sosebee has coached the past six seasons at 2A Hendersonville, compiling a 50-26 record.

Eddins had coached five years at Crest, and the Chargers are coming off a season when they finished 10-3 overall and 7-0 in winning the Big South 3A championship.

Sosebee’s Hendersonville team went 10-2 last season and reached the fourth round of the 2A playoffs. The Bearcats averaged 49.7 points a game, scored 55 or more points six times, and 70 or more points twice.

In addition to his stint at Hendersonville, Sosebee was head coach for four seasons at Greenville High in South Carolina.

At Concord, Paxton says he is leaving to spend more time with his family.

The 2021 team was Paxton’s most successful with the Spiders, finished 7-4 and winning the South Piedmont 3A title. He was named the conference’s Coach of the Year. Paxton’s overall record in four seasons at Concord was 11-29.

Paxton, a Concord alum, also has been head coach at Hickory Ridge and Mooresville high schools.

Weekend Rewind: Marvin Ridge track takes two

The high school track and field spotlight was focused on Union County over the weekend, with a pair of big multi-team meets taking place in the southwest part of the county.

Marvin Ridge swept the boys’ and girls’ team titles in the Marvin Ridge Invitational, with the Mooresville boys and Mallard Creek girls finishing second.

Meanwhile, the Clash of the Carolinas at Cuthbertson attracted teams from the Carolinas and Georgia.

That meet did not compile team scores, but several athletes had big days.

MARVIN RIDGE

The host Mavericks ran away with the boys’ team title, scoring 130 points. Mooresville (70), Mallard Creek (61), Sun Valley (58) and North Lincoln (56) rounded out the top five.

Josiah Wrice of Butler swept the 100 and 200 meter dashes, and Mallard Creek’s Guy Jarrell won the 400 meters and anchored the victorious 4-by-400 relay team. Sun Valley’s Denmar Chambers won the shot put and discus.

Marvin Ridge edged Mallard Creek 114.5-105 for the girls’ title. North Lincoln (75), Providence (49), Weddington and Charlotte Catholic (38 each) also were among the leaders.

Independence sprinter Maya Love won the 100 and 200 dashes, while Marvin Ridge’s Aria Wegh (100 hurdles and high jump) and Charlotte Catholic’s Lauren Grose (long jump and triple jump) also were double-winners.

CLASH OF THE CAROLINAS

The Cuthbertson boys swept the 4-by-100, 4-by-200 and 4-by-400 relays, and other Cavalier winners were Killian Fahy (400 meters) and Carson Hegele (pole vault).

Porter Ridge’s Brandon Benitez had a big day, winning the 110 hurdles and triple jump and finishing second in the 300 hurdles.

Other Charlotte-area boys’ winners were Emanuel Williams of Central Academy (800 meters); Weddington’s Caden Townshend (3,200 meters), the Weddington 4-by-800 relay team, and Hough’s Cole Catherman (high jump).

In the girls’ competition, Hickory Ridge won the 4-by-100 and 4-by-200 relays, but West Mecklenburg’s Sanu Jallow had the big individual performance. She won the 200 and 400 meter dashes and ran second in the 100 meters.

Cuthbertson’s Lillian Nasta swept the 800 and 1,600 meter runs.

Other Charlotte-area girls’ winners were Olympic’s Jasmine Greene (triple jump), Ardrey Kell’s Tyler Glover (shot put), Cuthbertson’s Emma Hyso (pole vault), and Hough’s Deborah Brown (discus).

Milestone for Hignight

Providence High baseball coach Danny Hignight reached a milestone Friday night, when his Panthers walloped host Butler 20-2 in a Southwestern 4A game.

Providence pitcher Michael Forret earned the victory, with help from two relievers, but for Hignight, it was his 400th career victory in 19 seasons at Providence.

The Panthers (7-0) have won 10 conference championships and reached the regional finals four times under Hignight. In 2015, the Hignight-coached Panthers won the 4A state championship.
