Thursday’s Prep Sports Rewind: CMS Flag Football League to resume this weekend
Hough, Chambers, Mallard Creek, Ardrey Kell, Myers Park and Butler are conference leaders or co-leaders after the first week of the Girls’ High School Flag Football League.
A second weekend of games is scheduled for Saturday morning at three high school sites in Mecklenburg County.
Opening games took place last Friday at Hough High.
This is the first season of organized flag football, with the program sponsored by the Carolina Panthers and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. The Panthers have provided a $50,000 donation to get the program started.
Organizers say the eventual goal is for flag football, operating this year at a club level, to become a recognized high school sport.
In Saturday’s games, each team will play twice. Games are 40 minutes, divided into two 20-minute halves.

Wednesday’s Rewind: Hough makes baseball statement
Hough’s baseball team had a statement victory Wednesday, trouncing host Cox Mill 17-2 in a meeting of 4A state powers.
The visiting Huskies improved to 10-0 on the season and are ranked seventh among 4A West schools this week by Maxpreps. Cox Mill, which is ranked No. 10, fell to 9-2.
Hough started early, scoring three times before the host Chargers could record the first out.
Brock Donnelly led the Huskies’ assault, with a single, two doubles and a triple. Max White got the victory on the mound.
Tyler Zedaris had two hits and scored once for Cox Mill.

PORTER RIDGE MEET
Ardrey Kell swept the boys’ and girls’ titles in a six-team meet.
The Knights’ boys totaled 302.5 points, followed by Olympic (120), Porter Ridge (91.5), East Mecklenburg (77), Independence (53) and Garinger (11).
Ardrey Kell’s Jamier Moten won the 100 and 200 dashes, and Jordan Glover took the shot put and was second in the discus.
Ardrey Kell’s girls had 216.5 points, beating Olympic (168.5), Independence (96), Porter Ridge and East Mecklenburg (60 each) and Garinger 33.
Independence’s Maya Love won the 100 meters and long jump and was second in the 200 meters. Natalie Martin of Olympic took the 800 and 1,600 meter runs.
PROVIDENCE MEET
Weddington won the boys’ and girls’ team titles in a meet with the host Panthers, Marvin Ridge and Myers Park.
Myers Park’s Justice Crawford won the 100 meters and long jump, but Weddington’s boys totaled 205 points and outdistanced Providence (162), Marvin Ridge (140) and Myers Park (78).
Weddington’s girls edged runner-up Marvin Ridge, 175-171.5. Trailing were Providence (129.5) and Myers Park (80).
Providence’s Tolulope Ajayi won the 100 and 200 dashes, and Weddington’s Kylie Howson took the shot put and discus.
CANNON SCHOOL MEET
The host Cougars won the boys’ and girls’ overall competition. The Cannon School boys had 99 points, topping Providence Day (82), Covenant Day (78), Bradford Prep (19) and Christ the King (8). Cannon School’s Quentin Clarke won the 100 and 200 meter dashes.
Cannon’s girls (100 points) beat Providence Day (79), Covenant Day (43), Bradford Prep (42) and Christ the King (14). The Cougars’ Samyha Suffren won the 200 meters and shot put, and Teri Pridgen took the 100 dash and anchored the winning 4-by-200 relay squad.

The Lake Norman boys and West Cabarrus girls were team champions in a three-team meet that also included Pine Lake Prep.
Lake Norman’s Kyle Sayre won the 400 meters and ran on a winning 4-by-400 relay team. Teammate Logan Dingman won the 800 meters and anchored the winning 4-by-800 relay squad. Pine Lake Prep’s Rylee Hegedus was the girls’ standout performer, winning at 200 and 400 meters and anchoring a winning 4-by-400 relay team.

Tuesday’s Rewind: Providence Day, Christian baseball on collision course
Charlotte Christian and Providence Day continued on a collision course for a showdown next week, as they won CISAA baseball games Tuesday and remained unbeaten in the conference.
Charlotte Christian trounced Covenant Day 15-2, and Providence Day edged Charlotte Latin 6-4.
Each team is 3-0 in the CISAA, with a pair of meetings set for next week.
The teams will play Tuesday at Providence Day and next Friday at Charlotte Christian.
Two Charlotte Christian pitchers combined to fire a one-hitter against Covenant Day, with a total of 10 strikeouts. Judd Utermark led the offense, going 3-for-4, scoring three runs, and driving in three runs.
Providence Day’s offensive leader was Anderson Shirey, who had two hits and an RBI. Charlotte Latin’s Tommy Beason went 2-for-3 with a double.
In the other CISAA game Tuesday, Charlotte Country Day scored a 9-3 road victory over Cannon School. Winning pitcher Brendan Pouliot worked 4.1 innings, allowing two hits and two earned runs. At the plate, he went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Other prep news
North Gaston has named Dan Rothwell as its new varsity head football coach, according to multiple published reports. Rothwell formerly was an assistant at Berry Academy. North Gaston finished 1-9 last season. The Wildcats’ last winning season was in 2007, when they finished 12-3 and lost to Western Alamance in the 3A state championship game.
… Mountain Island Charter’s Sydney Strauss has signed a swimming scholarship with Lynchburg University, a Division 3 school. She is the first swimmer from Mountain Island Charter to sign with a college. Strauss won 11 medals in the regional and state level with the Raptors and had three offers from Division 1 schools.

Monday’s Rewind: Catholic, Providence battling in conference race
A two-team battle has developed in the Southwestern 4A Conference’s girls’ soccer race.
Charlotte Catholic and Providence each scored lopsided victories Monday evening and remained unbeaten in conference play.
The Cougars blanked visiting Butler 9-0. Seven players scored for Charlotte Catholic, with Jordyn Miller and Hailey Brtalik each getting a pair of goals. Brtalik added an assist.
Meanwhile, Providence led 3-0 at halftime against visiting East Mecklenburg but outscored the Eagles 7-1 in the second half for a 10-1 victory.
It left Charlotte Catholic at 6-0 in the conference (7-1-2) overall, and Providence is 3-0 (5-2-1).
The teams are scheduled to meet for the first time this season at 7 p.m. Thursday at Providence. That will be weather-permitting, as showers and thunderstorms are forecast for Thursday.

Weekend Rewind: Charlotte athletes run NC best times Saturday
Charlotte-area athletes recorded seven state-best performances Saturday in a pair of track and field meets held in the region.
Six of those No. 1 performances came from the Weddington Invitational, where the Weddington boys and Marvin Ridge girls emerged as team champions.
The other came in the fifth annual Trojan Invitational at Olympic, where the Cuthbertson boys and Olympic girls won team titles. But several other state top-five performances were record in the meet at Olympic.
And the Corvian Invitational, at Corvian Community School, also attracted a number of top athletes from the area.
Weddington Invitational
Weddington’s boys ran off with the team title, scoring 106 points to runner-up Mount Tabor’s 64. Rounding out the top five were Pinecrest (52), Providence Day (50) and Marvin Ridge (41).

South Mecklenburg’s Graham Gutknecht won the pole vault with a state-best leap of 14 feet 6 inches. And Sun Valley’s Denmar Chambers had a toss of 56-2.5 feet in the shot put – the best this season in North Carolina.
Other winning performances that were state-bests came in the 4-by-100 relay, where the Providence Day team of Brunner Williams, Bryce Scott, Makai Bleu Coleman and Christopher Peal finished in 42.23 seconds; and the distance medley relay, where Weddington’s team of Sam Bland, Tyler Hornberger, Isaac clark and Caden Townshend finished in 10:24.91.
Charlotte Country Day’s Spencer Mermans was second in the shot put and discus, with performances in each that ranked No. 2 in the state this spring.
Marvin Ridge’s girls edged Weddington 97-96.5 for the team title. Providence (53), Providence Day (39) and Reagan (37) rounded out the top five.

Marvin Ridge’s Aria Wegh had a pair of state-best performances, winning the 100-meter hurdles in 14.83 seconds and the 300 hurdles in 44.95.

Cuthbertson’s boys and Olympic’s girls won team championships in this meet, at Olympic High.
The Cuthbertson boys had 95 points, with Washington’s Archbishop Carroll (88.5) second. Rounding out the top five were Olympic (67), Hough (59) and Dudley (51.5).

Olympic’s girls were comfortable winners, totaling 121 points to runner-up Cuthbertson’s 78. Watauga (61), Hough (49) and Dudley (43) rounded out the top five.

Jazmine Williamson of Olympic had an outstanding meet, winning the high jump in a state-best 5-6 and taking the long jump with a distance of 18-4. Williamson also ran on the 4-by-100 relay team that posted a time of 49.22, second-best in the state. Other members of the team were Kaylan Kincaid, Audrey Helms and Kierra Jones.
West Mecklenburg’s Sanu Jallow won both the 100 and 200 meter dashes and ran second in the 400 dash. Hough’s Lilly Waters captured the 1,600 and 3,200 meter runs.
Corvian Invitational
In the boys’ competition, North Mecklenburg’s Joel Nti swept the 110 and 300 meter hurdles, and teammate Christian Rand won both the shot put and discus.
The Mallard Creek team of Benji Black, Christian Dixon, Jarrell Guy and Jayden Lee took both the 4-by-100 and 4-by-200 relay events.
Andrea Ellerbe of Richmond Senior was a big winner among the girls, capturing the 100 and 200 dashes and running on victorious 4-by-100 and 4-by-200 relay squads.
Other double-winners were Mallard Creek’s Nyree Andrews (400 dash, 100 hurdles), Ashlynn Wimberly (high jump and triple jump), and Macy Dulaney (shot put and discus).
