Monday Rewind: Alexander Central getting used to no-hitters
No-hitters are getting to be the routine for Alexander Central’s baseball team.
Sophomore Maddox Jack fired a perfect game Monday night as the Cougars trounced host Freedom 12-0 in a Northwestern 3A-4A game.
Jack’s gem followed a no-hitter thrown Friday night by teammate Caleb Williams.
Jack, an Old Dominion commit, only worked five innings Monday, as the game was halted by the 10-run mercy rule. But in that time, he struck out 10 and didn’t issue a walk. Freedom got one base-runner via an error.
Offensively, Dusty Sigmon, Grove Lowrance and Jack each had two hits.
Alexander Central is 13-1 overall and 4-1 in the conference and is ranked 12th among all teams in North Carolina this season by Maxpreps.

Weekend Rewind: Queen City relays brings out top performances
One of the Charlotte area’s oldest high school track and field meets didn’t disappoint Saturday.
Eight athletes or teams turned in performances that were the best in North Carolina this season, during the annual Queen City Relays at Myers Park High.
The meet dates back more than four decades and this year assembled many of the Charlotte area’s top track and field teams.
Perhaps the highlight came in the boys’ metric mile, when the top four finishers turned in the four best times this season in the 1,600-meter run.
Leading the way was Ardrey Kell’s Patrick Gibbons, with a time of four minutes 16.3 seconds. He edged out Stuart Cramer’s Zachary Willer, who finished in 4:16.38.
Later Saturday, however, Gibbons’ time was eclipsed by Porter Ridge’s Jacob Laney in the Union County Championships (see below).
Marvin Ridge had two of the state-best performances. Devin Reid won the discus, with a distance of 153 feet 4 inches; and Aria Wegh took the girls’ 300-meter hurdles in a time of 44.19.
Other state-best performances: South Rowan’s Marcus Holloman high-jumped 6-4; South Mecklenburg’s Graham Gutknecht pole-vaulted 14-8; Butler’s Cheyla Scott won the girls’ high jump with a leap of 5-10; and Charlotte Country Day took the distance medley relay in a time of 12:04.8.
The eighth state-best performance came from Providence Day’s Landon Roemer. He finished fourth in the 3,200 meters, but his time of 9:41.29 was the best by a private school athlete this spring.
Also of note: Stuart Cramer’s Alexis Willis won two events, taking the high jump and long jump.
Union County championships
Four athletes won multiple events in this meet at Forest Hills High.
Porter Ridge’s Jacob Laney, running competitively for the first time in the spring season, easily won the 1,600 meters, turning in a time of 4 minutes 13.59 seconds – best in the state this season. He also won the 3,200-meter run.
Teammate Brandon Benitez won three events, taking the 110 and 300 hurdles and the triple jump.
Parkwood’s Emma Barnes won the 100 and 300 hurdles, and Maya Studney of Cuthbertson on the long jump and triple jump.
Porter Ridge’s Caleb McKinney won the 100-meter dash and was second at 200 meters. Weddington’s Victoria Knight did the same thing in the girls’ competition.
Cabarrus County championships
Two athletes won multiple events in this meet, at West Cabarrus High.
Hickory Ridge’s Spencer Higdon swept the 100 and 200 dashes, and teammate Nina Dominique did the same thing on the girls’ side. Dominique also was second in the 400 meters.
Daunte Marshall of A.L. Brown won the 110 hurdles and was second in the 300 hurdles. Yanira Finley of West Cabarrus took the girls’ 100 hurdles and was second in the 300 hurdles.
And Sydney Krause of Central Cabarrus won the triple jump, was second in the long jump, and fifth in the 200-meter dash.
