Meet the 2021-22 All-Observer high school indoor track teams.
These are the top performers in The Charlotte Observer’s coverage area, which covers 17 counties and 163 schools in western North Carolina.
All-Observer Boys Team
Mountain Island Charter senior Trevin Moyer is The Charlotte Observer boys’ indoor track runner of the year after winning two individual state indoor titles while helping his Raptors’ team to their first state championship in school history.
Moyer, an Arizona State commit, won 1A/2A state titles in both the 55-meter dash (6.25 seconds) and 500-meter dash (1:05.31) — with both coming in 1A/2A state record times.
▪ Cuthbertson’s Dustin Allen is the Observer boys’ indoor track coach of the year after leading the Cavaliers to an NCHSAA 4A state title in their first year in the classification.
Allen led the boys’ to their first indoor state title in school history.
ALL-OBSERVER FIRST TEAM
55-meter dash: Trevin Moyer, Mountain Island Charter, Sr.: Arizona State commit was the 1A/2A state champion in a 1A/2A state record time of 6.25.
300-meter dash: T. Moyer, Mountain Island Charter, Sr.: Raptors’ standout ran a personal-best 33.79 to finish third at the Virginia Showcase Jan. 14-16.
500-meter dash: T. Moyer, Mountain Island Charter, Sr.: 1A/2A state championship’s most outstanding runner set another 1A/2A state record (1:05.31), won another state title.
1000-meter run: Ethan Snyder, Marvin Ridge, Sr.: The Auburn University commit ran a personal-best 2:34.56 to finish third at the Liberty Premier Invitational on Jan. 8.
1600-meter run: Jacob Laney, Porter Ridge, Jr.: The Pirates’ junior won the 4A state title in a personal-best 4:15.34.
3200-meter run: E. Snyder, Marvin Ridge, Sr.: Mavericks’ standout ran a personal-best to finish as runner-up at the Virginia Showcase (Jan. 14-16), also finished third at the 4A state championships.
55-meter hurdles: Blaise Atkinson, Lake Norman Charter, Sr.: University of North Carolina commit ran a personal-best 7.35 to finish fifth at the New Balance Nationals March 11-13.
4 X 200-meter relay: Mallard Creek (Jarrell Guy, Benjamin Black, David Lampkin, Christian Dixon): Mavericks’ quartet ran an area-best 1:29.57 to win the Liberty Premier Invitational, Jan. 8; also 4A state runner-up.
4 X 400-meter relay: Cuthbertson (Thomas Stamper, Max Jarvis, Reece Morgan, Killian Fahy): The 4A state champions also won this event at the Nike Indoor Nationals in Staten Island, N.Y., March 11-13 in 3:24.37.
4 X 800-meter relay: Marvin Ridge (R.J. Gahan, Aneesh Duggirala, Aiden Tauro, E. Snyder): The 4A state champions also finished 23rd at New Balance Indoor Nationals in New York City, March 11-13, in 8:06.67.
High Jump: Kenneth Byrd, East Burke, So.: The Cavaliers’ sophomore jumped 6-4 to win the 1A/2A state title.
Long Jump: Jaikhob Covington, Monroe, Sr.: The Redhawks’ senior was the 1A/2A state runner-up in a personal-best 21-3.
Triple Jump: Marcus Cook, Salisbury, Sr.: The Hornets’ senior won the 1A/2A state title in a personal-best 44-11.
Pole Vault: K. Byrd, East Burke, So.: East Burke standout doubled as 1A/2A state champion with a vault of 16-0 to win it all.
Shot Put: Trevor Tate, Cuthbertson, Sr.: The Cavaliers’ senior was the 4A state runner-up in a personal-best of 50-5.75.

All-Observer Girls Team
Harding’s Akala Garrett is The Observer girls’ indoor track runner of the year after another banner season.
Garrett, the 4A state championships’ most outstanding performer, won 4A state titles in the 55-meter hurdles and 500-meter dash, while finishing as state runner-up in the 300-meter dash.
Garrett also won the 55-meter and 60-meter hurdles at the Nike Indoor Nationals March 11-13.
▪ Cuthbertson’s Dustin Allen is the coach of the year after guiding the Cavaliers’ girls’ to their fifth straight NCHSAA state championship. This indoor title was their first in class 4A.
Cuthbertson was dominant winning the title by 51 points over the field.
The Cavaliers were led by their 4 X 800-meter relay, featuring Alyssa Preisano, Justine Preisano, Charlotte Bell and Stella Kermes, who set a new all-class record at the state championships (9:24.12).

55-meter dash: Lauren Fleming, Marvin Ridge, Sr.: Mavericks’ standout was the 4A state indoor runner-up in 7.04.
300-meter dash: Kayla Davis, Hough, Sr.: The University of Florida commit ran an area-best 38.48 to finish as runner-up in the Millrose Games Jan. 27-29.
500-meter dash: Sanu Jallow, West Mecklenburg, Sr.: The Texas A&M commit ran a personal-best 1:12.62 to win the event at the Virginia Showcase; also won the 3A state title.
1000-meter run: Stella Kermes, Cuthbertson, So.: The Cavaliers’ sophomore was the 4A state champion in a personal-record time of 2:54.76.
1600-meter run: Maddie Huecker, Lake Norman, Sr.: University of North Carolina commit ran to a 4A state title in a personal-best 4:53.08.
3200-meter run: Mary Bonner Dalton, Myers Park, So.: Mustangs’ sophomore won the 4A state title in 10:49.39.
55-meter hurdles: Akala Garrett, Harding, Jr.: Rams’ junior won the 4A state title in a personal-best 7.88, also won the Nike Nationals in the same event in 7.99.
4 X 200-meter relay: Hickory Ridge (Abigail Thomas, Aniya Woodruff, Nina Dominique, Jaila Woodruff): The 4A state champions ran the state’s best time indoors this season with a 1:42.80.
4 X 400-meter relay (Abigail Thomas, Aniya Woodruff, Nina Dominique, Jaila Woodruff): The Ragin’ Bulls’ relay doubled as 4A state champions with the best time run in the state this indoor season (3:59.83).
4 X 800-meter relay: Cuthbertson (Alyssa Preisano, Justine Preisano, Charlotte Bell, Stella Kermes): The 4A state champions also ran a state record 8:59.63 to win the Nike Indoor Nationals, March 11-13. Their time was No. 14 in U.S. history in the event.
High Jump: Cheyla Scott, Butler, Jr.: Bulldogs’ junior jumped a personal-best 5-10.5 to win the Nike Indoor Nationals March 11-13.
Long Jump: Jazmine Williamson, Olympic, Sr.: The Trojan jumped a personal-record 17-9.5 at the Mondo Elite Invitational Jan. 28-29; finished fourth at the 4A state championships.
Triple Jump: Alexis Willis, Stuart Cramer, Jr.: Storm junior jumped a personal-best 37-11.5 at the JDL High School Invitational on Dec. 18; also won the 3A state championship.
Pole Vault: Kendall Ford, Weddington, Sr./Ava Studney, Cuthbertson, Sr.: Both seniors vaulted personal bests of 12-0, with Ford doing it at the JDL High School Kickoff, Nov. 20 and Studney doing it most recently to earn 4A state runner-up.
Shot Put: Elizabeth Sawicki, Cuthberston, Sr.: 4A state runner-up in a personal-best 38-7.25.
