Monday’s Rewind: Hough, Myers Park get bounceback wins
Hough and Myers Park bounced back from weekend setbacks, and Charlotte Christian overpowered another opponent Monday in Day 3 of the Jack Sink Spring Break Classic baseball tournament.
The event continues with seven games Tuesday and six more contests Wednesday, played at Myers Park, South Mecklenburg and East Mecklenburg high schools.
Hough (17-1), which lost for the first time this season on Saturday, trounced host South Mecklenburg 14-6.
Freshman Tyler Baird picked up the victory on the mound for the Huskies. Brody Taylor had three hits for South Mecklenburg.
Myers Park, which lost to Hough in the tournament’s opening game Friday, recovered Monday with a 10-1 romp over Charlotte Country Day.
The Mustangs scored their runs on just four hits, as Buccaneers’ pitchers issued 11 walks. Thomas Bolt, Max Perry and William Bryant each drove in a pair of runs for Myers Park. Kaleb Tischier pitched a complete-game two-hitter, striking out 10.
And Charlotte Christian, ranked No. 2 by Maxpreps among all high school teams in the state (behind Providence), blanked host East Mecklenburg 10-0.
Judd Utermark smacked his 13th home run of the season for the Knights, now 17-3.
Other games at the tournament:

Rocky River 2A-3A’s big night
Parkwood and Monroe scored emotional baseball victories Monday evening – for very different reasons.
Parkwood, playing for the first time since the sudden death of the school’s popular head football coach, Terrence Gittens, late last week, blanked Anson County 11-0.
But there was more than that. Wolf Pack pitcher Ashton Plyler pitched a perfect game and struck out all 21 Anson County hitters in the game.
Meanwhile, Monroe defeated Victory Christian 13-3 in a nonconference game. It was the first baseball victory for Monroe in six years. The Redhawks’ last victory came on March 14, 2016, in a 9-7 decision over West Charlotte.
Monroe did not field a baseball team in the 2018 or ’19 seasons, and the 2020 campaign was halted by COVID-19. Since that 2016 victory over West Charlotte, Monroe had lost 51 consecutive games.
Latin wins rematch
Charlotte Latin got goals from three different players and beat Providence Day 3-1, in a rematch of last spring’s N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 4A state finals.
The Chargers edged Charlotte Latin 4-3 for the championship last May, but the Hawks (8-1, 2-0 CISAA) won this meeting, behind goals by Lucy Dempsey, Avery Cheatwood and Ella Smith. Cameryn Sicard scored for Providence Day (7-4, 1-1).
Monday standouts
Shania Coppin (Union Academy soccer): Coppin, a sophomore, scored five goals in her team’s 6-0 blanking of Jay M. Robinson. In 13 matches this season, Coppin has 22 goals and seven assists.
Leah Correll (East Lincoln softball): Correll was one of several pitchers to toss a no-hitter Monday (see “Softball” section below). Correll’s game carried her team past host West Iredell 14-0.
Wynne Gore (Charlotte Christian softball): Gore pitched a two-hitter and struck out 11, as the Knights improved to 8-1 on the season with a 4-0 shutout of a High Point Christian team with a 10-4 record.
Kyree Walker (Monroe baseball): Walker had a big day in Monroe’s first baseball victory in six years. He had two hits and drove in three runs in his team’s 13-3 triumph over Victory Christian. Walker is batting .308 this season.
