It will take a state championship rematch to settle the score this season between the girls’ soccer teams from Charlotte Latin and Providence Day.

Providence Day got a goal late in the second half from Cameryn Sicard and blanked visiting Charlotte Latin 1-0 Thursday in a key CISAA match.

The Chargers (11-4, 5-1) avenged a 3-1 loss last month to Charlotte Christian (11-2, 5-1) and created a tie atop the conference standings.

It was the final regular-season meeting between the two squads.

Those same two teams played for the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association’s 4A state championship last spring, with Providence Day winning a wild 4-3 decision.

This time, the Chargers got shutout play in goal from Chandler Brooks and Addy Holgorson, who split time in the net.

In other CISAA play, Charlotte Christian blanked Cannon School 3-0, and Covenant Day topped Charlotte Country Day in a shootout. The two teams tied 2-2 after regulation and two overtime periods, but Covenant Day won 4-3 on penalty kicks.

Tuesday’s Rewind: South Meck softball stops Ardrey Kell

South Meck women’s softball would host the Ardrey Kell Lady Knights Tuesday April 19, 2022
South Meck women’s softball would host the Ardrey Kell Lady Knights Tuesday April 19, 2022 Jonathan Aguallo Special to the Observer

Taylor Barlow picked up a victory in her team’s biggest game so far this season Tuesday night, thanks to … Taylor Barlow.

Barlow’s single in the bottom of the ninth inning scored Megan Rapp with the game-ending run, as South Mecklenburg edged Ardrey Kell 4-3 in a first-place girls’ softball showdown in the South Meck 4A Conference.

The victory left the Sabres at 4-1 in the conference (8-1 overall) and dropped Ardrey Kell to 6-2 (11-7 overall).

Tuesday’s game was, in some ways, a reversal of the teams’ first meeting this season, on March 18.

That time, Ardrey Kell scored a walk-off winning run in the bottom of the seventh and won 5-4.

In Tuesday’s game, neither starting pitcher was around for the finish.

Ardrey Kell starter Kate Blau worked three innings, and Savannah Campbell finished. She struck out nine in her stint.

Kariya Proctor started for South Mecklenburg, working four innings. Barlow pitched the final five frames.

The Knights, who were held to two hits by Proctor and Barlow, jumped to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third, but South Mecklenburg tied the contest in the bottom of the fourth on Mary Cass Millikan’s two-run single.

Ardrey Kell went up 3-2 in the top of the fifth, but South Mecklenburg tied the game in the bottom of the inning.

Then it became a pitchers’ duel between Campbell and Barlow until the ninth.

South Mecklenburg is in the midst of a busy week. The Sabres face Berry Academy in a makeup doubleheader Wednesday, then play Olympic on Friday.

Ardrey Kell travels to Butler in a nonconference game Thursday, then visits conference foe Harding on Friday.

The Sabres scored with 2:30 left in the first half, when Tori Monaco headed in a corner kick from Emma Matuskiewwicz. Ardrey Kell entered the game with the state’s No. 1 ranking, according to Maxpreps, in 4A.

Meanwhile, host Independence edged Southwestern 4A foe Providence 1-0 and improved to 11-1-1, 6-0-1. The Partiots have a narrow lead over second-place Charlotte Catholic (7-1)

Independence scored on a goal by Samantha Swinson, with an assist from Abbey Stengel. Goalkeeper Caroline Wehr got the shutout, making six saves.

Harding High track star Akala Garrett LaSonja Collins Special to the Observer

Most of North Carolina’s top high school track and field athletes compete for schools within a 45-minute drive from Uptown Charlotte.

Weekend Rewind: CMS has big week in baseball, softball league races

It’s spring break week for students in most counties across the Charlotte region, but Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools students had their break last week and return to classes Tuesday.

That also means a return to conference action this week in the Queen City 3A-4A, South Meck 4A and Southwestern 4A conferences.

Several of those leagues have games scheduled that could help determine the regular-season championships.

Two of the area’s top baseball teams, Providence and Ardrey Kell, have a big nonconference game set later in the week.

Meanwhile, Hough faces its top conference foe twice this week in baseball.

And there’s a big South Meck 4A softball game set for Tuesday.

Here’s a look at the various area races:

Queen City 3A-4A baseball: Hough (10-0) and Hopewell (8-0) are atop the conference standings. They meet Tuesday at Hough and Thursday at Hopewell.

South Meck 4A baseball: Ardrey Kell (6-0), Olympic (4-1) and Myers Park (4-2) are the leaders. Ardrey Kell hosts Olympic on Tuesday, and then the teams meet at Olympic on Thursday. Ardrey Kell also faces Providence on Friday.

Southwestern 4A: Providence (8-0 and 18-0 overall), the state’s No. 1-ranked team, has a fairly comfortable lead over Butler (7-3) and Charlotte Catholic (7-3). The Panthers’ big game this week is Friday’s home nonconference meeting with Ardrey Kell.

Queen City 3A-4A softball: Hough (7-0) has a big lead over second-place North Mecklenburg (4-3).

South Meck 4A softball: This is a tight race, with Ardrey Kell (6-1), South Mecklenburg (5-1) and Myers Park (5-2) all competing. Ardrey Kell plays at South Mecklenburg on Tuesday.

Southwestern 4A softball: Independence (7-1), Providence (5-1) and Butler (5-2) are the leaders. Independence and Providence have already played their regular-season games, splitting a pair. Independence faces Butler on April 26 and 28.
