Hough routs Independence in high school baseball Tuesday, runs record to 18-1

Over on the south end of Mecklenburg County, Providence High’s Panthers are unbeaten and ranked No. 9 in the nation.

But on the north end of the county, Hough High’s Huskies are having quite a season in their own right.

Tuesday night, Hough improved to 18-1 with an easy 13-3 win over Independence that ended in the fifth inning due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Hough jumped out to an 8-2 lead early and cruised, led by senior outfielder Aiden Evans, who was 4-for-4 with two home runs, a single, and a double. He was just a triple away from reaching the cycle.

“I had two bombs, I felt pretty good, this is a great win for the Huskies,” Evans said. “Bats have been hot, and our pitchers have been dominating”.

The Patriots struggled throughout the game, finishing with four errors and five runners stranded. Things seemed to go downhill for the Patriots in the second inning, with the game getting out of hand after a relatively close first inning.

The seniors for Hough seemed to impose their will, with catcher Jacob Gorman and senior first baseman Brock Donnelly adding five more runs between the two.

Donnelly’s 3-run shot in the fifth ended the game, dropping Independence’s record to 7-13.

Coach Jimmy Cochran and the Huskies will look to finish their season of dominance next week as they face Hopewell, while the Patriots will look to end their season on a good note, facing Rocky River and Butler.
