Tuesday’s Rewind: Myers Park stops South Meck, Ardrey Kell best Olympic in soccer
Myers Park can’t win the South Meck 4A girls’ soccer championship this season, but the Mustangs went a long way in helping crown a champion Tuesday.
Myers Park, the defending 4A state champion, played host South Mecklenburg to a 0-0 tie. Meanwhile, Ardrey Kell went on the road and blanked Olympic 9-0.
At the end of the day, Ardrey Kell led the conference with an 8-1 record, trailed by South Mecklenburg (6-1-1) and Myers Park (4-3-1).
Ardrey Kell can wrap up the South Meck 4A title Thursday night by beating Berry Academy, which is 2-6 in conference play. That is the Knights’ final conference match, as they face four nonconference foes in the final two weeks of the regular season.
Should the Knights be upset by Berry, South Mecklenburg will have to win its final two matches to take the South Meck 4A crown.
Ardrey Kell’s Grace Meyers, Carly Montgomery and Ellie Riechman each scored a pair of goals in the blanking of Olympic.
Salisbury football coach steps down
Brian Hinson, who coached Salisbury to the 2A state football championship in the spring 2021 season, is stepping down as coach of the Hornets after six seasons, according to multiple published and broadcast reports.
Hinson coached Salisbury to the state finals in 2019, with the Hornets losing to Shelby. After capturing the title in 2021 (the postponed 2020 fall season), the Hornets went 9-0 last fall in the regular season and finished 11-1, losing to Maiden in the third round of the playoffs.
Hinson, a Rowan County native, also served as head coach at East Rowan High and an assistant at Catawba College, his alma mater. He had a 47-15 record in his six seasons at Salisbury.
In other news, Porter Ridge High announced that an alum, Justin Leath, will become athletics director at the start of the 2022-23 academic year. Leath, a 2007 Porter Ridge graduate, was a lacrosse standout for the Pirates.
