Providence High hires longtime coach from Moore County to lead basketball team

Providence High has named Nick Boney as its new boys basketball coach.

Since 2010, Boney has been head coach at Union Pines, a Moore County high school in Cameron, a small town about two hours east of uptown Charlotte. Boney was previously an assistant at Pinecrest for five seasons.

Union PInes was 18-8 last season and made the N.C. 3A playoffs.

Boney’s teams had two straight winning seasons after going eight straight seasons without one.

At Providence, Boney will replace Larry Epperly, who’d coached the Panthers since the 2016-17 season. His teams were 14-109. The Panthers have not had a winning season since the 2009-10 team finished 18-10 under Bill Smith.
