Thursday’s Rewind: Providence, Myers Park win conference baseball titles

Providence High’s baseball powerhouse will enter the state playoffs undefeated.

Playing away from home for probably the last time this month, the Panthers blanked host butler 6-0 Thursday evening and captured the Southwestern 4A Conference tournament championship.

Providence’s victory was part of a very busy night in high school sports, with champions crowned in baseball and softball conference tournaments, girls’ soccer champions determined in two conferences, and lacrosse state playoffs continuing.

Providence’s victory improved the Panthers’ record to 26-0 on the season. They haven’t lost since dropping a third-round state playoff game last June.

Anthony Watson’s home run provided Providence with all the offense it needed Thursday.

Butler fell to 15-9 on the season.

With its perfect record and a No. 1 ranking in North Carolina, coach Danny Hignight’s team almost certainly will be the West Region’s No. 1 seed when the state playoff schedule is finalized Monday.

That means the Panthers will play at home through the Regional finals.

Myers Park takes title

Myers Park won a pair of closely-contested games Thursday, capturing the SoMeck 4A Conference baseball title.

The Mustangs, seeded second in the conference tournament, toppled No. 1 seed Ardrey Kell 5-3 in 10 innings in the finals.

The semifinals had been rained out Wednesday, so teams had to play twice Thursday.

Myers Park downed third-seeded South Mecklenburg 4-3 in its semifinal, scoring twice in the bottom of the sixth inning for the decisive runs. Max Perry had two hits, and Reece Perry drove in a pair of runs.

Meanwhile, Ardrey Kell downed No. 4 seed Olympic 6-1 in the late afternoon, then traveled to Myers Park for the championship contest in the evening.

Myers Park scored twice in the top of the 10th for the winning runs. Once again, Max Perry had a big game. He had two hits and drove in four runs. Owen Williams also had a pair of hits. Matthew Suppa had two hits and two RBI for Ardrey Kell.

Myers Park reliever Kaled Tischler worked the final three innings and got the victory.

3 soccer champs crowned

Independence completed its improbable championship run, while Charlotte Latin and Providence Day finished in a tie for first place Thursday.

Independence completed Southwestern 4A Conference play with an 11-0-1 record after blanking Charlotte Catholic 3-0. Abbey Stengel, Maddie Fowler and Samantha Swinson each scored a goal, and Aleisha Lamb assisted on all three scores. Caroline Wehr made five saves in goal.

It is believed to be the Patriots’ first-ever conference championship in girls’ soccer.

Providence (10-1-1) finished in second place with a 9-0 blanking of Butler.

Meanwhile, the CISAA race finished in a tie, as both Charlotte Latin and Providence Day won their matches. The two teams, who split a pair of regular-season contests, finished 9-1.

Charlotte Latin downed Charlotte Country Day 5-1, as Eleanor Fisher scored three goals. Cora Wickham and Ella Smith added single tallies, and Madie Eastman scored for Country Day.

Providence Day blanked Cannon School 4-0, behind Blane McElroy’s two goals.

In the other CISAA match, Covenant Day edged Charlotte Christian 2-1.

Wednesday Rewind: Providence Day, Latin seek soccer title

An era will end, and a championship might be decided Thursday evening with a pair of CISAA girls’ soccer games in Charlotte.

Providence Day and Charlotte Latin enter the final night of the regular season tied for first place with 8-1 records.

Each will be favored, with Providence Day (14-4, 8-1) hosting Cannon School (7-9, 0-8) at 7 p.m., and Charlotte Latin (14-2, 8-1) visiting Charlotte Country Day (9-7-1, 3-6) at 7 p.m.

But regardless of what happens, Thursday night’s contest will be the final regular-season game for longtime Latin coach Lee Horton.

Horton, who has coached boys’ and girls’ soccer at Charlotte Latin for 37 years, is retiring at the end of the season. He will be replaced by former Hawks’ standout Kyle Seares.

Horton earned his 1,000th coaching victory at Charlotte Latin earlier this spring and is a member of the N.C. Soccer Hall of Fame and a former National Coach of the Year (in 2018).

He is likely to have several postseason matches as coach, with the Hawks expected to get one of the top seeds in the 4A private school playoffs that begin next Tuesday.

Providence Day and Charlotte Latin, which split their two meetings this season, met for the state title last spring, with the Chargers beating the Hawks 4-3.

Northside names coach

Ed Cooke, a longtime amateur basketball coach in the Charlotte area, is taking over as head coach of the boys’ varsity at Northside Christian. He replaces Erasto Hatchett, who had a 115-64 record in six years at the school.

Cooke has coached Team United Nike Eybl for several years and served as an assistant at Metrolina Christian.

Northside Christian finished 23-9 last season, losing to Wayne County Day 59-57 in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association’s 2A playoff quarterfinals.

Tuesday’s Rewind: Providence, Hough advance in league tournaments

Two of Mecklenburg County’s high school baseball powers passed their first postseason tests with ease Tuesday evening.

Providence, ranked fifth nationally by Maxpreps, blanked East Mecklenburg 6-0 in a semifinal of the Southwestern 4A Conference tournament at Butler High.

And Hough, regular-season champion in the Queen City 3A-4A Conference, trounced North Mecklenburg 18-1 in a semifinal contest.

Providence (24-0) will face third-seeded Butler in the Southwestern 4A finals at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Hough (20-2) will face second seed Hopewell (20-5) for the Queen City 3A-4A title at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. That game will be at Hopewell.

Providence got a home run from Anthony Watson and allowed only four East Mecklenburg hitters to reach base.

Butler advanced to the finals with an 8-4 victory over second seed Charlotte Catholic. The Bulldogs scored four times in the top of the fourth inning and added two in the fifth.

In Queen City play, Hough coach Jimmy Cochran used three pitchers – James Nesta, Carlos Calderin and Jackson Greene – and limited each to about 30 pitches.

Hopewell had a tougher time, downing third seed Mallard Creek 9-5. Blake Hollar went 3-for-4 for the Titans, driving in two runs. Mallard Creek’s Marcus Mauney had two hits and two RBI.

Cougars win golf regional

Freshman Will Hartman shot a 1-under-par 71 and led Charlotte Catholic to the West 4A regional golf championship Tuesday. The tournament was played at Brushy Mountain Golf Club near Taylorsville.

The Cougars’ team total of 297 was the same as runner-up Providence, but Charlotte Catholic won via a tiebreaker. Myers Park (305) was third. All three teams advance to the 4A state tournament next week.

Medalist honors went to Providence senior Aiden Browning, who fired a 5-under-par 67. Teammate Colin Sailma shot a 70.

Other members of the Charlotte Catholic team were Steven Shea, Clay Tardiff and Tyler Dorsey.

Individual 4A qualifiers were Ardrey Kell’s Ben Chase, Michael Switzer, Michael Currie and Aedan Barnes; Hough’s Jude Carpenter and Parker Gordish; South Caldwell’s Mac Helton; and Alexander Central’s Aiden Hollar.

Charlotte Catholic’s Will Guthie had the team’s fifth-best score and qualified for the state tournament on an individual basis.

3A WEST

Kings Mountain (302), Crest (306) and Stuart Cramer (307) were team qualifiers from the 3A West Regional, played at River Bend YMCA Course near Shelby.

Kings Mountain’s Will Spicer won medalist honors with a 5-under-par 67. His teammates were Thomas Spicer, Caleb Marr and Cooper Putnam.

Individual state tournament qualifiers included Alex Bock (Freedom); Max Cranford (Fred T. Foard); Nick Norman and Tate Smith (Forestview); Maddox Whittington (Hibriten); and Lane Mason (North Gaston).

It is the first time that Christ the King has qualified for the state golf tournament.

David Broome has been named head coach of the boys’ varsity basketball team at Hickory Ridge. He replaces Scott Fortune, who resigned for personal reasons, according to athletics director Chris Batchelor.

Broome is a Cabarrus County native who played three seasons at Northwest Cabarrus. He was a junior varsity head coach and varsity assistant at Central Cabarrus and spent last season as a varsity assistant at West Cabarrus.

Hickory Ridge, a member of the Greater Metro 4 4A Conference, compiled an 8-16 record last season.
