Charlotte Catholic, South Stanly win NCHSAA state golf championships Tuesday

It was a big day for Charlotte Catholic at the N.C. 4A state golf championship.

After winning the 3A title last season, Catholic moved up to 4A this year and repeated as state champion, beating Cary’s Green Hope High by three shots at Pinehurst’s No. 8 course.

Charlotte Catholic’s Will Hartman won the individual state championship in 4A, shooting the only under par round of the tournament, firing a 1-under-71 Tuesday. Hartman had four birdies in his round.

Marvin Ridge’s Jack Wieler was second and Catholic’s Steven Shea finished tied for fourth.

One other Observer-area team won a title Tuesday.

In 1A, South Stanly beat Mitchell by two shots to win the team championship. All four South Stanly players broke 90, led by Dustin Hurley (82). Luke Webb (85), Davis Wright (86) and Luke Dennis (86) were all part of the scoring quartet.

Mitchell High sophomore Connor Warren won the individual title by eight shots.

East Surry won the 2A title, its seventh overall and first since 2008. Midway’s Logan Atkins won the individual title. In 3A, Greenville’s JH Rose won the championship and Rose sophomore Luke Mosely won the individual title in a playoff.

In 4A, Charlotte Catholic’s Will Hartman and Marvin Ridge’s Jack Weiler are tied for the individual lead after shooting a pair of even-par 72s. But there are six players within three shots of the lead. Charlotte Catholic is 18-over in the team race and 11 shots clear of Green Hope and Pinecrest. Catholic won its fourth straight regional championship last week.

Forestview’s Nick Norman shot a 73 in the opening round of the 3A tournament and has a one-shot lead over High Point Central’s Davis DeLille and Central Cabarrus’ Ryan Masterton. Greenville’s JH Rose leads the team race by six shots over Fayetteville’s Terry Sanford.

3A Scoring Totals

In 2A, two non-area teams lead the way as East Surry and MIdway are tied for the overnight team lead. Beddingfield’s Drew O’Neal shot a 2-over-74 to take the individual lead.

In 1A, South Stanly grabbed a three-stroke lead over Christ The King as the two area teams battle it out for a title. Mitchell is also tied for third. All four scoring players for South Stanly shot in the 80s Monday, including Reid Smith who shot an 82 and is tied for ninth. Christ The King’s Colin Ferrick leads the tournament by 1 shot over Mitchell’s Connor Warren.
