A third Charlotte high school must forfeit all of its 2021 football games.
For the third time in two months, a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools football team will forfeit all of the games it played in during the 2021 season.
Chambers athletic director Montis Lash confirmed to The Observer on Wednesday night that Chambers had reported to the N.C. High School Athletic Association that the school had been made aware that a football player on the 2021 team was ineligible. The Observer obtained a copy of the letter.
“Julius L. Chambers High School was made aware of a student/athlete who was ineligible for the 2021-2022 football season,” it read. “Julius L. Chambers High School administrators investigated this matter and determined it was true based on the residence requirements and in response voluntarily reported the violation to the North Carolina High School Athletic Association. Following an investigation, the NCHSAA Commissioner ruled that Julius L. Chambers was in violation for using an ineligible player-residence requirement.”
The NCHSAA ruled that Chambers will forfeit all of its 2021 football games, pay a $250 fine and return any monies earned during its home playoff games. In the letter, Turner said Chambers would not appeal the decision.
Last season, Chambers finished 14-2 and reached a third straight N.C. state championship game, losing 14-2 to Raleigh’s Cardinal Gibbons. Chambers, which had won the previous two state championships, was nationally ranked all season.
The Cougars’ forfeits follow similar actions by West Charlotte and Myers Park in the past two months. Each school self-reported violations around residency to the NCHSAA and was penalized.
