Hurdler, runner are reader’s picks for Charlotte-area boys track athletes of the year

After a weeklong vote, two area student-athletes have been named The Charlotte Observer’s Reader Choices for boys track athletes of the year.

In 3A and 4A classifications, the winner is Porter RIdge’s Brandon Benitez. According to NC MileSplit, Benitez had the top outdoor 400-meter hurdles time in North Carolina this year, a time of 55.48 seconds.

In the 1A, 2A and private schools classification, the winner was Morganton’s Vance Jones, who runs for Patton High School. Jones won the NCHSAA 2A state championship in the 800-meters (1:55.76).

Overall, more than two dozen athletes were nominated for the award. To be nominated athletes had to be a state champion or have the state’s top time in their event.
