Hurdler, runner are reader’s picks for Charlotte-area boys track athletes of the year
After a weeklong vote, two area student-athletes have been named The Charlotte Observer’s Reader Choices for boys track athletes of the year.
▪ In 3A and 4A classifications, the winner is Porter RIdge’s Brandon Benitez. According to NC MileSplit, Benitez had the top outdoor 400-meter hurdles time in North Carolina this year, a time of 55.48 seconds.
▪ In the 1A, 2A and private schools classification, the winner was Morganton’s Vance Jones, who runs for Patton High School. Jones won the NCHSAA 2A state championship in the 800-meters (1:55.76).
Overall, more than two dozen athletes were nominated for the award. To be nominated athletes had to be a state champion or have the state’s top time in their event.
