Readers pick pair from W. Iredell, Northside Christian as girls track athletes of the year

After a weeklong vote, two area student-athletes have been named The Charlotte Observer’s Reader Choices for girls track athletes of the year.

In 3A and 4A classifications, the winner is West Iredell’s Alaya Gillespie. Gillespie won the 100-meter dash at the N.C. 3A state championships. She ran a time of 12.48 seconds.

In the 1A, 2A and private schools classification, the winner was Northside Christian’s Tyler Clyburn, who won the NCISAA Division III 100- and 200-meter dash state championships. She ran 12.62 seconds in the 100 and 25.63 in the 200.

Overall, more than two dozen athletes were nominated for the award. To be nominated athletes had to be a state champion or have the state’s top time in their event. The Observer will name its annual All-Observer team later this month.
