All-Observer Boys Track: Mountain Island’s Moyer, Washington take top honors

Mountain Island Charter School has pulled off a rare sweep, producing the 2022 All-Observer boys track athlete and coach of the year.
Mountain Island senior Trevin Moyer is the boys’ track athlete of the year after winning 1A state championships in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes in his final high school meet.
Moyer, an Arizona State commit, was named the 1A state championship’s most outstanding performer for his efforts, which included running the state’s best time this outdoor season (46.97) to win the 400-meter state crown.
Moyer was also the 1A West Regional champion in all three sprints.
Mountain Island’s Robert Washington is the Charlotte Observer boys’ track coach of the year after leading his team to their second straight, 1A state championship.
Washington guided his Raptors’ team to five individual state titles and two relay state championships to beat the field by 47 points in the repeat effort.

All-Observer Boys Track Team
FIRST TEAM
100-meter dash: Jaylin Milton-Hall, Mountain Island Charter, Sr./Trevin Moyer, Mountain Island Charter, Sr.: Milton-Hall ran a personal-best 10.46 at the Clash of the Carolinas, and was 1A state runner-up; Moyer ran personal-record 10.49 to win 1A/2A Catawba Shores’ conference title, also was 1A state champion.
200-meter dash: J. Milton-Hall, Mountain Island Charter, Sr.: Raptors’ senior ran a personal-best 21.29 at Cuthbertson March 2.
400-meter dash: T. Moyer, Mountain Island Charter, Sr.: The Arizona State commit won another state title here in a personal-best 46.97, which was also the state’s fastest time this outdoor season.
800-meter run: Emanuel Williams, Central Academy, Jr.: The Cougars’ junior ran a personal-best 1:53.33 to win the Carolina Distance Carnival; was also 3A state runner-up.
1600-meter run: Jacob Laney, Porter Ridge, Jr.: The 4A state runner-up also ran an Observer-area and personal-best 4:07.26 at the Carolina Distance Carnival.
3200-meter dash: J. Laney, Porter Ridge, Jr.: The Pirates’ junior was the 4A state champion with a personal-best time of 8:58.12 at the Arcadia Invitational (CA).
100-meter hurdles: Blaise Atkinson, Lake Norman Charter, Sr.: The 3A state champion and University of North Carolina commit also ran a personal and state-best 13.87 to win the 3A Midwest Regional title.
300-meter hurdles: Blaise Atkinson, Lake Norman Charter, Sr.: The Knights’ senior also ran the state’s fastest time and personal-best 37.98 to win the 3A state title.
High Jump: Landis Fredericks, Hickory Ridge, Sr.: The Ragin’ Bulls’ senior jumped a personal-record 6-8 to win the 4A Midwest Regional title; also 4A state runner-up.
Long Jump: Bryce McFerson, Metrolina Christian, Sr.: The Notre Dame football commit jumped a personal-best 23-4.5 to win the Metrolina Athletic conference (MAC) title; also NCISAA Division I runner-up.
Triple Jump: Ali Currie, Albemarle, Sr.: The Bulldogs’ senior won the 1A state championship in a personal-best 46-8.
Pole Vault: Graham Gutknecht, South Mecklenburg, Sr.: The Charlotte 49ers’ commit was the 4A state champion in a personal-best 15-10.
Discus: Spencer Mermans, Charlotte Country Day, Jr.: The Buccaneers’ junior won the NCISAA Division I state title in a personal-record 178-8.
Shot Put: Denmar Chambers, Sun Valley, Sr.: The N.C. State commit and 4A state runner-up also jumped a personal-best 61-7 to finish as 4A Midwest Regional runner-up.
4 X 100-meter relay: Mallard Creek (Jayden Lee, Benjamin Black, Jarrell Guy, Christian Dixon): The Mavericks’ relay had the state’s best time (41.37) on their home track April 21; also finished fourth-place at the 4A state championships.
4 X 200-meter relay: Cuthbertson (Brad Sweeter, Keenan Jackson, Killian Fahy, Reece Morgan): The Cavaliers’ quartet won the 4A state title in the state’s best time this outdoor season -- 1:25.90.
4 X 400-meter relay: Cuthbertson (R. Morgan, Thomas Stamper, B. Sweeter, K. Fahy): The Cuthbertson relay had the state’s best time at the Penn Relays in 3:17 (10th-place finish); also 4A state runner-up.
4 X 800-meter relay: Marvin Ridge (Michael Keller, Aiden Tauro, Ethan Snyder, R.J. Gahan): The Mavericks’ quartet ran an Observer-area best 7:54.90 to finish as 4A state runner-up.
