All-Observer Golf: Charlotte Catholic’s Hartman, Catholic coach Panther take top honors

Charlotte Catholic’s Will Hartman and Shawn Panther headline the 2022 All-Charlotte Observer boys golf team.

The team represents the top golfers in the newspaper’s 162-school coverage area in western North Carolina.

Hartman, a freshman, is The Charlotte Observer boys golfer of the year after winning the 4A state individual state championship in his first high school season.

Hartman was the only player under par in the two-day event, shooting a 1-under 143 at Pinehurst No. 8.

Hartman became the first individual from Mecklenburg County to win the 4A state title since Hough’s Patrick Cover in 2014.

Hartman is the top-ranked player in the state and No. 2 ranked freshman in the nation, according to the American Junior Golf Association’s Rolex Junior Golf Rankings.

Panther is the All-Observer coach of the year after leading the Cougars’ to their fourth straight NCHSAA state championship. Charlotte Catholic beat Cary’s Green Hope by three shots to claim the 4A state crown in its first year back in the state’s biggest classification.

ALL-OBSERVER BOYS GOLF

FIRST TEAM

Alex Bock, Freedom, So.: The 3A West Regional runner-up also finished tied for ninth at the 3A state championships.

Seamus Bogan, Gaston Day, So.: The NCISAA 2A state champion shot a 2-under 70 to win while leading his Gaston Day boys’ golf team to a state title as well.

Aidan Browning, Providence, Sr.: The Appalachian State commit defended his 4A West Regional title, shooting a 5-under 67. He tied for 18th at the 4A state championships.

Lawson Harkey, West Lincoln, Sr.: The Tusculum University (Tennessee) commit was co-medalist at the 2A West Regional; also tied for 11th place at the 2A state tournament.

Will Hartman, Charlotte Catholic, Fr.: The Cougars’ senior won the 4A state individual title with four birdies in the final round.

Max Jacobson, Charlotte Country Day, Sr.: The Buccaneers’ senior shot a 2-over 74 to help lead Charlotte Country Day to a NCISAA Division I state team title.

Hunter Justice, Davidson Day, So.: The Patriots’ sophomore was one of three players in the field under par (71) to finish as NCISAA 2A state runner-up.

Sam Mace, East Burke, Sr.: Lenoir Rhyne University signee was co-2A Midwest Regional champion; also tied for eighth at the 2A state championships.

Nick Norman, Forestview, Sr.: The Belmont Abbey College commit was 3A state runner-up for the second straight season; also tied for third at the 3A West Regional.

Jack Wieler, Marvin Ridge, Jr.: The Mavericks’ junior was 4A state runner-up; tied for eighth at the 4A Midwest Regional and won the Southern Carolinas’ conference title.
