All-Observer boys lacrosse: Weddington’s Kazella, Cannon’s Schattner take top honors

Weddington senior Ryan Kazella and Cannon School’s Steve Schattner highlight the 2022 All-Observer boys lacrosse team.

Kazella, an attacker, is the Charlotte Observer boys’ lacrosse player of the year after scoring 75 goals and dishing out 26 assists to earn All-American and all-state honors while leading the Warriors (19-4) to a 4A state runner-up finish.

Kazella, a York College (Pennsylvania) commit, was also the Southern Carolinas/Rocky River conference player of the year and offensive player of the year at the Charlotte Lacrosse Awards.

Schattner, the coach of the year, led the Cougars to the NCISAA Division I state championship with an 18-2 record.

The Cougars’ wins (18-2) included victories against 4A state semifinalist Hough and 1A/2A/3A state champion Lake Norman Charter.

All Charlotte Observer Boys Lacrosse Teams

First Team

Attackers

Jack Dalton, Lake Norman Charter, So.: First-team all-state pick scored 56 goals and had 87 assists.

Ben Irmscher, Charlotte Catholic, Sr.: Washington & Lee University commit was a second-team all-state selection.

Alex Jessey, Providence Day, So.: All-state sophomore poured in 71 goals, had 41 assists and is on track to be the school’s all-time leading scorer.

Ryan Kazella, Weddington, Sr.: York College (Pennsylvania) commit earned All-American, all-state and Southern Carolinas/Rocky River conference player of the year honors with 75 goals and 26 assists for the 4A state runner-up.

Tyler Price, Lake Norman Charter, Fr.: The 1A/2A/3A state championship most valuable player had 77 goals and 53 assists.

Jack Ransom, Charlotte Catholic, So.: Cougars’ sophomore earned second-team all-state honors.

Brevin Wilson, Cannon School, So.: The Cougars’ all-state attacker scored 55 goals to go with 45 assists.

Attack/Midfielders

Ewan McAloon, Hough, Sr.: Cabrini University (Pennsylvania) commit was a second-team all-state performer with 13 goals and eight assists.

Griffin Peterson, South Mecklenburg: University of the South commit was SoMeck 4A conference player of the year and a second team all-state pick. Peterson had 51 goals, 34 assists and 18 takeaways for the Sabres.

Midfielders

Will Crispino, Cannon School, Jr.: In 35 games, Crispino had 35 goals, 20 assists and 55 points

Ben Habel, Christ the King, Fr.: On a 14-7 team, Habel had 40 goals, 64 assists and 104 points

Dane Johnson, Weddington, Sr.: In 21 games, Johnson had 36 goals and 23 assists.

Jake Rombough, Lake Norman Charter, Jr.: On a 19-3 team, Rombough played 22 games and had 46 goals and 13 assists.

Brooks Stankavage, Ardrey Kell, Jr.: The Knights’ junior was a first-team all-state pick with 39 goals, 17 assists and 91 groundballs.

Shane Supek, Lake Norman, Sr.: The second-team all-state pick had 35 goals and 17 assists for the Wildcats.

Long Stick Midfielders

Mitch Kastel, Lake Norman Charter, Jr.: The Knights’ junior earned first-team all-state honors with 78 groundballs.

Drew Tenzer, Myers Park, Sr.: The Mustangs’ first-team all-state performer had 76 groundballs.

Faceoff

George Kalos, Hough, Sr.: The University of North Carolina commit won 375 groundballs, had 298 groundballs, 25 goals and 10 assists to earn first-team all-state honors.

Grant Larson, Charlotte Country Day, Sr.: The Denison University commit and all-state pick won 368 faceoffs (78 percent) to go with 49 goals and 39 assists.

Defenders

Karter Williams, Hough, Jr.: The Huskies’ junior forced 19 turnovers and had 29 groundballs to earn second-team all-state.

Miles Edmiston, Cannon School, Sr.: The Monmouth University commit earned All-American and all-state honors as one of the top defenders in the state, according to Cannon School lacrosse coach Steve Schattner.

Connor Glosson, Providence Day, Sr.: The University of Tampa commit was an all-state pick with 48 groundballs and 35 takeaways.

John Long, Hough, Sr.: The Huskies’ first-team all-state defender had 56 groundballs, while forcing 26 turnovers.

Charlie Smith, Weddington, Jr.: Two-time all-state defender has 60 groundballs.

Luke Thompson, Lake Norman Charter, Jr.: The all-state defender had 52 groundballs and forced 27 turnovers.

Goalkeepers

Will Mitchell, Weddington, Sr.: The second-team all-state performer saved 56 percent of the shots on goal.

Brayson Wilson, Cannon School, Jr.: The University of North Carolina commit earned All-American and all-state honors; saved 62 percent of the shots on goal.
