Thursday’s fall sports rewind: Catholic soccer puts opponents on notice

The Charlotte Catholic boys’ soccer team dealt with injuries and inexperience last fall, but the Cougars gave notice Thursday night that they are ready to regain their position as a state soccer power.

Before a home crowd, Charlotte Catholic won the soccer version of the Battle of Park Road, blanking South Mecklenburg 2-0. The visiting Sabres entered the match ranked 15th in the Observer’s Sweet 16.

Cristian Chamorro and Domenico McPhillips each scored for the Cougars.

South Mecklenburg put plenty of pressure on the Charlotte Catholic defense, as Patrik Burling had four shots and Cullen Ferguson had three. But Cougars’ goalkeeper Gavin Banks turned in a clean-sheet effort.

Thursday’s standouts

Megan Brown (Gaston Day volleyball): Brown had 30 kills, four aces, 17 digs and 30 service points in her team’s 3-1 victory over SouthLake Christian.

Will Grainger (Charlotte Country Day soccer): Grainger’s two goals led his team to a 3-0 road victory over Davidson Day.

Allison Oberlin-Pope (East Mecklenburg volleyball): Oberlin-Pope led the Eagles to a 3-1 victory at Hopewell, totaling seven service aces and 12 kills.

Ava Pritchett (Providence volleyball): Pritchett, a senior, had 13 kills and nine digs in her team’s 3-1 victory at South Mecklenburg.

Carmel Christian 1, Marvin Ridge 0: The host Cougars, who finished second in the private school 4A state playoffs last year, opened with a victory.

Wednesday’s Rewind: No. 1 Providence starts strong

The Charlotte area’s top-ranked boys’ high school soccer team opened its season impressively Wednesday night, as Providence traveled to Winston-Salem and blanked Mount Tabor 4-0.

The Panthers, No. 1 in the Observer’s preseason Sweet 16 ratings, got off to a fast start with an early goal from Nick DeGabrielle.

Koble Ankrah, Noah Franks and Brock Gramann also scored for Providence, which built a 3-0 halftime lead against the Spartans.

The Panthers won’t get much rest, as they’re back in action Thursday night. They’ll face another Winston-Salem team, R.J. Reynolds, in a 7 p.m. match at the Matthews Sportsplex.

Wednesday’s standouts

Joshua Higginbotham (Porter Ridge soccer): Higginbotham scored with 24 seconds left in the match, lifting his team to a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over visiting Independence.

Ella Moore (Mooresville girls’ cross-country): Moore, a senior, took first place by a margin of nearly 1½ minutes in the girls’ division of a Greater Metro 4 4A meet in Concord.

Quinn McGuire (Ardrey Kell soccer): A senior, McGuire scored two goals and added an assist as the Knights blanked host North Mecklenburg 5-0.

Eli Petko (Weddington soccer): A junior, Petko had the biggest scoring night of an Observer-area player. He had four goals and two assists in his team’s 9-0 rout of Monroe.

Corvian Community 5, Mallard Creek 1: Corvian Community, a 1A school, trounced its 4A neighborhood rival in the Battle of Johnston Oehler Road. It was the Cardinals’ first victory over a 4A opponent in the school’s four-year soccer-playing history. Mallard Creek beat Corvian Community 4-1 last year.

Myers Park 1, Hough 0: The fourth-ranked Mustangs blanked the No. 3 Huskies in this battle of Charlotte-area soccer powers. It was the season-opener for Myers Park, which is back in action Thursday night at Pine Lake Prep and then faces private school power Rabun Gap (Ga.) School on Saturday.

Porter Ridge 2, Independence 1: Joshua Davidson scored in the first half, giving the visiting Patriots a 1-0 halftime lead. But the Pirates battled back, tying the match on a Landon Jewett goal with seven minutes remaining and then winning on Joshua Higginbotham’s goal with less than a half-minute to play.

GREATER METRO 4 4A MEET

Mooresville swept first place in the boys’ and girls’ division of a conference meet, run at Frank Liske Park in Concord.

Ella Moore led a 1-2-3 sweep for Mooresville in the girls’ race, with a time of 20 minutes 11.1 seconds on the 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) course. Lauren Vanderpool and Mariah Knight were second and third.

Mooresville had 24 points, followed by Hickory Ridge (41), Cox Mill (74), West Cabarrus (99) and A.L. Brown (142).

The boys’ winner was Mooresville’s Clark Kremar, in 17:11.9. Teammate Michael Martinez was second, followed by Hickory Ridge’s Eli Witte.

Tuesday’s Rewind: Garinger volleyball snaps 60-game losing streak

Tuesday was a really nice day for Garinger High athletic followers.

The Wildcats have suffered through tough times in some of their athletic programs over recent years, but on the second day of the 2022-23 public school athletic season, Garinger went unbeaten.

The Wildcats won both their volleyball and boys’ soccer opening matches and did so in convincing style.

The volleyball team’s victory ended a 60-match losing streak.

Both teams traveled to Harding, with the girls’ volleyball squad sweeping the Rams, 25-16, 25-14 and 25-14; and the boys’ soccer squad rolling to an impressive 10-0 victory.

The last Garinger volleyball victory came in September 2018. The Wildcats went winless in the 2019, 2020 and 2021 seasons.

Under coach David Garrett, Garinger was a soccer power in the middle of the last decade, compiling a 19-5-1 record in 2015.

Garrett left the school for several seasons, returned in the COVID-abbreviated winter 2020 campaign, and then coached the Wildcats to a 13-7-2 record and a 4A state playoff berth last fall. In four seasons prior to last year, Garinger’s combined record was 14-42-2.

The Wildcats have a tough schedule ahead, with matches Aug. 26 against Laney and the following day against East Chapel Hill.

TUESDAY’S STANDOUTS

Anne Bradley Bing (Gaston Day volleyball): Bing had 15 kills, 11 digs and 22 service returns in her team’s 3-0 sweep of Hickory Christian.

Grayson Gilbert (West Lincoln soccer): Gilbert stopped 10 of 11 Crest shots, helping his team to a 2-1 victory.

Ryan Mitchell (Charlotte Latin soccer): Mitchell had the hat trick and added an assist to his three goals, as the Hawks trounced Metrolina Christian 8-1.

Mya Sellers (East Mecklenburg volleyball): Sellers, a senior, had seven service aces as the Eagles blanked Berry Academy 3-0.

Marco Wright (Gaston Day soccer): Wright broke a number of scoring records as a junior, and he’s off to a big start again. He scored three times in his team’s 9-0 rout of Hickory Christian.

Charlotte Country Day 3, Christ School 2: The visiting Buccaneers improved to 3-0 on the season.

Charlotte Latin 8, Metrolina Christian 1: The Kyle Searles Era got off to a good start, as the Hawks steamrolled the host Warriors. It was the first game with Searles as head coach at Charlotte Latin. He replaced Lee Horton, who retired in May after 27 years at the school.

Ryan Mitchell’s three goals and Parker Rubinacci’s two scores led the Hawks. Edward Guggenheimer assisted on the first two Hawks goals. Eli Robinson scored for Metrolina Christian.

Davidson Day 8, The Burlington School 1: The Patriots opened their season in a big way, scoring six times in the first half.

East Mecklenburg 5, Berry Academy 0: Cesar Velaso and Ramon Espinoza each had a goal and an assist in the Eagles’ home shutout victory.

South Mecklenburg 2, Marvin Ridge 0: The Sabres, No. 15 in the Observer’s preseason Sweet 16 rankings, scored an impressive road victory. Luke Faucette and Alesio Scaldaferri each notched a goal, and Cullen Ferguson assisted on each tally. South Mecklenburg faces a strong Charlotte Catholic team on the road Thursday.

Monday’s HS Rewind: Hough falls to Asheville-area soccer power

Hough opened its rugged early-season non-conference boys’ soccer schedule Monday night with a 1-0 road loss to Asheville-area power T.C. Roberson.

The host Rams scored in the first half on a goal by Ben Nus, off an assist from Noah Ballard.

Hough, No. 3 in the Observer’s preseason Sweet 16 ratings, was able to get six shots on goal but couldn’t get the tying tally.

T.C. Roberson’s victory avenged a 3-2 season-opening loss last season at Hough.

The Huskies have another tough road match Wednesday, traveling to fourth-ranked Myers Park. That clash is set for a 7 p.m. kickoff.

Monday’s standouts

Genesis Alanis (East Mecklenburg volleyball): A senior, Alanis had seven digs and five service aces as the Eagles downed Olympic 3-1.

Antoni Ceciliano (Lincoln Charter soccer): A junior striker, Ceciliano had the biggest scoring total on the opening day of the season for North Carolina’s public and charter schools. He had four goals as the Eagles trounced Thomas Jefferson Academy 5-1.

Cole Wilson (Cox Mill soccer): Wilson scored three goals, leading the second-ranked Chargers to a 5-1 victory over visiting East Forsyth.

Community School of Davidson 6, Lake Norman Charter 0: The visiting Spartans blew it open with four second-half goals. Riley Hall got the clean sheet in goal.

Independence 2, Sun Valley 1: Charlie Gottlieb scored one goal and assisted on the other, leading the Patriots to a road victory. Josh Davidson scored once, and Luca Martinez had an assist for the Patriots.

Christ the King 3, Carmel Christian 0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-12)

East Mecklenburg 3, Olympic 1 (25-8, 25-16, 24-26, 25-16): Sophie Gerlach had 15 assists, and Genesis Alanis had seven digs and five aces for the victorious Eagles.

Lake Norman Charter 3, Pine Lake Prep 1 (25-20, 18-25, 25-15, 25-20)

Mallard Creek 3, Weddington 1 (25-20, 24-26, 27-25, 25-22): The Mavericks knocked off the seventh-ranked Warriors in a very closely-played match.

Alexander Central 3, Statesville 1 (25-14, 25-23, 16-25, 25-21): Ashlyn Merritt had seven kills and Sarah Hollar totaled five blocks for Alexander Central.

East Rowan 3, North Stanly 1 (25-15, 25-19, 27-29, 25-19): Riley Hill totaled 26 digs, and Leah Hinceman had 14 kills for East Rowan.

Kings Mountain 3, Highland Tech 0 (25-19, 25-6, 25-6): Camden Pasour had 31 service points, seven digs and 19 assists for the Mountaineers. Meila Songaila added 19 kills and six digs.
