Chambers holds at No. 1, several big jumps in The Observer Sweet 16 HS football poll

Chambers has been ranked No. 1 in The Sweet 16 for at least part of each of the past five seasons, and the Cougars will stay there this week.

Chambers handled Cardinal Gibbons, 28-14, in a state championship rematch in Rock Hill, South Carolina, on Saturday. Gibbons was the preseason No. 1 team in North Carolina.

Five ranked teams lost on opening week, so there’s a lot of movement, but no new teams.

Weddington moved up to a spot to No. 4, ahead of a showdown at No. 2 Providence Day Friday. Kings Mountain beat Cleveland County rival Shelby and jumped up four spots to No. 10. And Hickory Ridge, which shut out Hunter Huss Friday in Gastonia, jumps into the top 10 at No. 8.
