Ashbrook High’s Carmelo Bess is The Charlotte Observer HS football player of the week

A Gaston County high school football player is the first Charlotte Observer player of the week of the 2022 season.

Ashbrook High’s Carmelo Bess earned 29 percent of the vote this week to finish ahead of Cannon School’s Tyler Green and Mooresville’s Jawarn Howell. There were nearly 22,000 votes cast.

Bess won after a big performance in a 46-12 win over Concord last week. Bess returned a punt 55 yards for a touchdown and he ran for an 85-yard score.
