New No. 1 in The Sweet 16 HS football poll, new teams and a rare feat

Special to The Observer

There’s a lot of change in this week’s Charlotte Observer Sweet 16 poll.

First, Providence Day becomes the rare private school to sit on top of the poll during the regular-season. The Chargers moved to No. 1 after beating No. 7 Weddington 52-32 Friday. Weddington was ranked No. 4 going into the game.

Former No. 1 Chambers lost a close game to the No. 2 ranked team in Virginia, Highland Springs, and fell one spot.

New to the poll this week are No. 11 Burns (2-0), No. 13 West Rowan (2-0), No. 14 Olympic (2-0) and No. 15 Watauga (2-0). All four have moved in after hot starts to the season. Watauga, for example, beat No. 16 Maiden 23-19 Friday.
