Myers Park, Parkwood athletes win Charlotte Observer weekly awards
Myers Park’s Kemp Walters and Parkwood’s Adan Gonzalez-Beason won The Charlotte Observer athlete of the week awards Friday.
Walters, the girls athlete of the week, scored all three goals in a 3-0 win over Covenant Day Aug. 25. Walters is a sophomore.
More than 46,000 people voted for the girls award this week. Waters finished ahead of Charlotte Catholic’s Caroline Rodriguez and Mountain Island Charter’s Lizzie Rubble.
Gonzalez-Beason, the boys athlete of the week, scored a goal with 90 seconds left in the game to help Parkwood to a 3-3 soccer tie with Victory FC Aug. 23.
Gonzalez-Beason also had three goals in a 5-4 victory over Metrolina Christian to earn their first win of the season Aug. 25.
Gonzalez finished ahead of Union Academy’s Patrick Mackinnon after a tight race all week. More than 22,000 votes came in.
