Unbeaten Independence shuts down West Charlotte in rivalry matchup
Independence shut down West Charlotte’s high-powered offense Friday night, and the Patriots did enough right on offense to post a 28-7 victory.
It gave first-year head coach D.J. McFadden’s team a 3-0 record.
The last time Independence won its first three games was four years ago.
Facing a West Charlotte team (1-2) that scored 40 points last week, Independence’s defense made its mark early. The Patriots held the Lions to just 12 yards total offense in the first quarter.
Meanwhile, Independence totaled 121 yards, 9 of those on a Sincere McIntyre touchdown run.
The Patriots made it 14-0 on Khaleil Hoke’s 1-yard run early in the second quarter, but West Charlotte cut the margin in half late in the period, driving for a touchdown on an 18-yard pass from Caleb Barringer to Khemaan Fleming.
The Patriots made it 21-7 in the third quarter, scoring on a short run by quarterback Justin Little. That drive covered only 13 yards, as the Patriots recovered a bad snap on a West Charlotte punt attempt.
Independence put it away in the fourth quarter, when Joshua Iseah picked off a Barringer pass and dashed 55 yards for a touchdown.
West Charlotte resumes play next Thursday, hosting Garinger at Waddell High’s field.
Independence goes after its fourth victory next Friday, traveling to Hopewell.
