West Meck’s Beady Waddell, CSD’s Tanner Mullins are The Observer’s midseason POTWs
Community School of Davidson wide receiver Tanner Mullins and West Mecklenburg linebacker Beady Waddell are The Charlotte Observer’s high school football midseason players of the year.
After nearly 50,000 votes were counted, Waddell finished with 31 percent of the vote on the defensive side, ahead of Newton-Conover’s Ben Watson and Lincolnton’s Andrew Phelps.
Mullins captured nearly 50 percent of the vote on the offensive side, finishing ahead of Hickory Ridge’s Jalen Harris and West Lincoln’s Mason Avery.
To be nominated, a player needed to be ranked in the top 10 in a major statistical category statewide on MaxPreps.
At the time of the poll, Mullins was leading the state in receiving yardage. Before Friday’s 49-0 win over Winston-Salem Prep, Mullins’ 972 yards receiving ranked No. 12 nationally.
Before Friday’s game, Waddell was tied for No. 10 in the state with 77 tackles. Waddell had five tackles in Friday’s 23-14 loss to North Mecklenburg.
