Welcome Burns High to The Observer’s Sweet 16, and get ready for more changes

After one week of the N.C. playoffs, there are not many changes to The Observer’s Sweet 16 poll for the region’s best teams, but next week’s matchups may change all that.

Ranked teams will be playing other ranked teams in many games.

For example, No. 3 Hough hosts No. 11 Mallard Creek in a rematch of the Mavericks’ 13-9 upset win last month. No. 10 Olympic, enjoying its first-ever 11-win season, plays at No. 5 Independence, enjoying its best season since 2014. And No. 6 Butler hosts No. 15 Mooresville.

Joining the poll this week is Burns High. The 2A Bulldogs have won eight straight games since losing to No. 1 Kings Mountain, a 3A team.
